A. The place where the police found the severed foot.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

A. In Episode 4 - "Let's Give the Boy a Hand".

After a severed hand is found at the beach, and police learn that it belongs to Tony Tucci (the night watchman abducted from the hockey arena), they assume Tucci is dead - another dismembered victim of the "Ice Truck Killer".

But days later, a severed foot turns up on the streets of Miami, posed next to a soccer ball (and wearing a soccer shoe).

The killer, it appears, is leaving his victim around town, piece by piece.

But "Dexter" realizes that there is a connection between the locations where the body parts have been left and his personal family history.

In flashbacks to Dexter's childhood, we see that the beach where the hand was found was a beach where Dexter's family vacationed.

The spot where the foot & soccer ball was found is where his father reprimanded him against bullying another kid at a soccer game.

Dexter's photo album at home has pictures of both places.

The killer, it seems, is copying those photos, recreating Dexter's childhood, using the body parts as reminders.

After Tucci's leg turns up later, they learn that the killer is temporarily keeping the victim alive (at the former Angel of Mercy hospital) while he performs the amputations.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

A. A waterfront lawn (or small park) in front of a government building.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. In Miami, next to a drawbridge on the Miami River.

Well, at least part of it.  The producers were getting tricky in this scene, and I haven't quite figured out all of their tricks.

The brown building with horizontal black stripes (windows) that you see in the background of this scene is the Miami Riverside Center, a city government building located on the river's northeast edge, at 444 SW 2nd Avenue, in Miami.

Out in front (south) of the Center is a grass lawn (a small park, perhaps), which is surrounded by a wide concrete walkway (a riverwalk) which includes two boat slips on the park's northwest corner.

West of this lawn, where the south edge of this boat slip meets the river's bank, it forms a small, triangle-shaped concrete plaza, and it is on this triangular jetty (immediately south of the boat slips) that the "Ice Truck Killer" left the severed foot.

The Center and park are located on the northeast edge of the Miami River, between the SW 2nd Street drawbridge (on the southeast) and the i-95 overramps (to the northwest).

The scene where Dexter turns around and looks back at (what appears to be) a trio of bridges actually shows the ramps of Interstate 95 (a.k.a. North-South Expressway) to the northeast of Dexter - and the river below.



However, The tall pink & white building (with "Amanda's Snack Cakes" painted on the side) seen in the background (to the northeast) does not exist - at least not in the spot where it appears to be in this scene.  Unless I've somehow missed something, I believe that they artificially inserted that building into the background via CGI.

Why?  So it would match the next flashback, of the soccer field - since the same obvious building appears in both past & present scenes, yet everything else has changed.

(That soccer field, it turns out, is actually located in L.A., just two thousands miles west of the original location. They faked the same pink building there, to make the two scenes look similar.)

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A. The key here was the drawbridge. Earlier, while I was looking for the larger drawbridge (where the ice truck turns around) over the bay, I noticed that there were a lot of smaller drawbridges over the river that runs through Miami.  So when I saw the drawbridge in the scene, I started at the mouth of the river (at the Bay) and worked my way back, comparing each location to the scene (via Live Local aerial photos), looking for that brown striped building. I didn't have far to go. The drawbridge is only about a half mile inland from the Bay.
