Dexter Filming Locations: Driving with Hannah

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Driving with Hannah

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A public road, next to a beach.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere near Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 7, of Season 7, "Chemistry".

After they had sex at Santa's Holiday Adventure, we see Dexter and Hannah driving in a car, past the beach, talking.

Dexter tells her that it can't happen again.  And when she agrees, it seems to surprise him.

"We both know it wouldn't end well," she says.

She asks him if he plans to try to kill her again, and he says no.

He mentions that she doesn't seem to be very upset, for someone who was almost killed.  She says that maybe she never really believed he would do it...

Just then, a biker cuts them off, and Dexter honks.  The biker flips them off.

Dexter remarks "Boy, did he pick the wrong car," and the two of them share a laugh.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. a public street, next to a beach - just not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. This is Ocean Blvd, the main street that runs along the coast of Long Beach, CA.

For most of this scene, they are driving southeast (away from downtown Long Beach, and towards the peninsula).

But since they wanted to show the beach behind both Dexter and Hannah, they shot Dex's scenes headed the other direction (northwest) on the same street.

But Ocean Blvd is a long street, running the length of the Long Beach coastline.

So, where, exactly, on Ocean Blvd were they?

Here are some matching screencaps and Google StreetViews:

This opening beach panorama was shot looking back west/southwest from E. Ocean Blvd near La Verne
(which just happens to be exactly where they built Santa's Holiday Adventure)

Here is a matching Google StreetView:

(What you're seeing on the horizon are the freight elevators at the Port of Long Beach.
    )

Next, the camera swings to the northwest, and zooms to show a couple of buildings on the beach:
(It was shot from basically the same spot on Ocean Blvd, only the camera moved.)

Here is a matching Google StreetView:

The building on the right is a beach house at 5116 E. Ocean (near Granada).  The building on the left
is government/beach property at 5000 E. Ocean (probably restrooms, although I'm not sure).

Look out the window in this next shot, and you'll see a red sign, a blue sign, and several yellow concrete posts.
They shot this on Ocean Blvd at Claremont Place (roughly 5376 E. Ocean), close to Bayshore Park,
about half a mile southeast of that opening beach shot.

Here is a matching Google StreetView:

The angle isn't perfect, but you can see both signs.
It's the entrance to a beach parking lot, and the red sign is: "Warning: Severe Tire Damage".
[Here's an even better view from Bing.]

Finally, there's the scene where the biker cuts them off:

Here is a matching Google StreetView:

This was shot heading southeast on the Long Beach peninsula, around 5514 E. Ocean, just west of Deb's
beach house.  In fact, you can see Deb's place in the photo above. (It's the light tan house on the right.)

Finally, they tried to fake us out with this shot:

But that is just an establishing shot they got in Florida.
But just for the record, it was shot on the 1400 block of Brickell Bay Drive, in Miami.

Here's a matching Google StreetView:

Here is an aerial photo of the route.   And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A.  In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the now, though, I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode airs, I already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Elaine, Mia, Joel, Susan, Eric, Jeff, Kerry & others. My thanks to all of them.

This time, I didn't need any help. I can't imagine how many times I've driven Ocean Blvd, so I knew it when I saw it.  The only challenge was tracking down the exact spots on Ocean to match the screencaps.
