DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Dixie's Diner

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. "Dixie's", a diner.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 10, of Season 7, "The Dark... Whatever".

The "Phantom" arsonist, who had already burned two victims alive (in a car and in an elevator) strikes again.

This time, the crime scene is a diner/cafe, where witnesses report that he burned a mother and her 6-year-old child to death.

In the scene, the witnesses report that the arsonist was dressed in a silver fire-proof suit, was extremely tall, and seemed like some kind of alien or monster.

Dexter muses that people find it difficult to comprehend that fellow human beings are capable of such acts, so inventing aliens and monsters makes it easier to accept.

Dexter watches the fire inspector, Phil Bosso, calmly look at the burned corpse of the dead child, and suspects that he may well be the "Phantom" arsonist.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A former restaurant at a hotel.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This was shot in a former café located inside the Seaport Marina Hotel, at 6400 E. Pacific Coast Highway, in Long Beach, a frequent filming location for Dexter.

(They also often use the hotel's parking lot as a base camp when they're filming in the area.)

We last saw it back in the fourth season, when it played the role of the Tampa Beach coffee shop where Dexter took the Trinity Killer (so he could sneak off and visit a weather convention).

Back then, it was a deli called Mosher's Gourmet Restaurant, but it has since gone out of business.

You can also see the hotel lobby in the scene.

The old hotel is at the south corner of PCH and Second Street.

It's right across the street from the shopping center behind which they filmed the Frosty Swirl scene, and just a half a mile south of the spot where they filmed the "searching for bodies" on a beach scene.

And the marina in the hotel's name is the Alamitos Marina, where they filmed the scenes of both Dexter's dock (where Isaak kills Louis) and the cafe scene where Dexter talks to Isaak from a distance.

[ UPDATE: In early 2017, the SeaPort Marina Hotel closed its doors for good. Plans call for the aging hotel to be demolished and replaced with a new upscale shopping/dining center. ]

I shot the photo below back in 2007.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the now, though, I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode airs, I already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Elaine, Mia, Joel, Susan, Eric, Jeff, Kerry & others. My thanks to all of them.

    This tip came from Rick.

The key to confirming it was this unusual brass lamp/chandelier hanging from the ceiling,
    seen behind Dexter
when he first enters the room:

That same lamp can be seen in the Tampa weather convention scene:

    (Thanks, Rick!)
