Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In a short scene in Episode 5, of Season 6, "The Angel of Death".
Dexter,
convinced that Travis Marshall is the Doomsday Killer, abducts him. He
lies in wait in the back of Travis's car, then captures him with a
garrote around his throat, directing him where to drive.
He makes it clear that he plans to kill him for the Doomsday murders.
But when
Dexter learns that Travis is only Professor Gellar's acolyte, and has
never been able to kill someone himself, Dexter lets him go - concluding
that his real target should be Gellar.
In this
scene, Dexter directs Travis to pull over and get out of the car.
He tells him to start walking, and that he'll find his car back at the
art museum.
(Later, Dexter waits outside Travis's apartment, waiting for him to lead him to Professor Gellar.)
Travis
follows instructions. And while he's walking away, his phone
rings. It's Professor Gellar. Travis doesn't tell him about
the encounter with Dexter. But Gellar suspects that something is
amiss and warns Travis not to try to "run away from God".
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. This is on the north side of Fountain Ave, just west of Gordon Street, in Hollywood, CA.
The car is headed east on
Fountain, and pulls over to the south curb (facing wrong-way traffic)
before Travis gets out, and walks away west.

He wouldn't have far to walk. That is just half a block from Travis's apartment on Gordon Street. (Except for one thing: he's actually walking away from his apartment.)
And it's literally next to the south side of the Sunset-Gower studio, where Dexter is filmed.
In fact, the wall with the (fake) graffiti,
seen behind Travis as he walks away, is almost certainly the white
block wall (topped with a chain-link fence, topped with barbed wire) that surrounds the south end
of the studio.
The strip mall on the north side of Fountain, (which can be glimpsed in the background), has been used multiple times on Dexter, playing many different roles: from The Swamp bar (where Dexter stalks his mother's killer), to the tailor shop where Dexter is abducted by the Skinner, to the print shop where Deb picks up funeral photos of Rita.
(This season, that strip mall plays the role of Dexter's donut shop, in the 8th episode.)
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In previous seasons, I've
usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the 6th season, though,
I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I
already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan, Jason, Elaine, Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, Jen, and others. My thanks to all of them.
In this instance, I didn't need
any help. I have seen (and photographed) that same strip mall so
many times before on this show that there's no way I could fail to
recognize it when it pops up again in an episode.
