Dexter Filming Locations: Dexter & Miguel's Beach

The location: Dexter & Miguel's Beach.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A beach.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. In Miami, Florida.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 4 (of season 3), "All in the Family".

Miguel Prado is sitting on the beach in the morning, brooding about a falling-out with his brother Ramon, when Dexter shows up and offers him a cup of coffee.

Prado tells him about how he feels he is losing Ramon, like he lost his other brother, Oscar. Dexter opens up a little and tells him about his own emptiness.

Prado then tells Dexter that he can no longer trust Ramon, and that Dexter is now the only person that he can really trust - which makes Dexter ponder whether he could actually have a real friend and a real family.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A public beach - but not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This was filmed on the far west end of the beach at Long Beach, CA, just east of the Shoreline Marina.

All the producers really did was to throw in an establishing shot of a colorful lifeguard tower (which isn't really on this beach).

It's just a short walk south of two other Dexter locations, the taqueria (where Debra first met Anton), and Prado's Cuban beach festival.

It's south of the 700 block of Shoreline Drive, about a half mile east of Shoreline Village.

To get there, take Shoreline Drive to Linden Ave, and turn south/southeast into the parking lot. Then walk south on the beach (or on the nearby breakwater), and you'll find the exact spot just a few yards east of the breakwater, near the tide line.

I shot the photos below in 2009

The photos above (looking south) shows the beach where they filmed the scene, and the oil island on the left.

This shot is looking back north towards Ocean Blvd in Long Beach, seen from the breakwater just west of the spot where they sat.
The round building on the near the center is the International Tower, while the castle-like building to the right is the Villa Riviera.
Part of the Shoreline Marina can be glimpsed to the left.

Here is an aerial photo of the area. And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. This was an easy one. Fortunately, during the scene they turned the cameras around and showed us the buildings behind the beach - and they were instantly recognizable Long Beach landmarks: the Villa Riviera and the circular International Tower (where they filmed a scene from "Lethal Weapon"). You can also see part of the Long Beach oil islands just off shore.
