Dexter Filming Locations: Dexter and Jordan Chase talk on the phone while driving

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Dexter & Chase talk while driving

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A public street -- either Muralia Road, or a street near Muralia.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 12, of Season 5, "The Big One".

Jordan Chase has kidnapped Lumen, and has locked her in the trunk of his car.

In this scene, Chase phones Dexter to taunt him, and to lure him to the abandoned summer camp where he is taking Lumen.

Chase is driving in his car while talking on the phone.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A public street - but nowhere near Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This short scene was shot on Loynes Drive, in Long Beach, CA.

To be more precise, Chase is driving on Loynes Drive, east of Bixby Village Drive, (the intersection where they later filmed the fruit vendor scenes).

That's about a quarter of a mile east of Pacific Coast Highway.

But while the early part of the scene is shot with his car driving east on Loynes, the latter part of the scene is shot with his car driving west, on the same street.

It's easy to tell the difference, since the Bixby Village golf course is visible on the north side of the street (when he's heading east), but a mobile home park is visible on the south side of the street (when he's driving west).

They shot quite a few scenes while they were on Loynes Drive, all for that same final Episode 12.

Besides this scene of Chase phoning Dexter, they also shot the scene of Dexter stealing a car, of Debra talking to the fruit vendor, of Chase stopping his car to silence Lumen.

I shot the photo below in December 2010:

In the photo above, my camera is looking east/northeast on Loynes Drive, just east of Bixby Village Drive.

Compare my photo above to the screencap below. Note the double yellow traffic sign in the center divider
the white safety rail, and the bushy palm tree & the Bixby Village golf course on the left.

Here is an aerial photo of the road. And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In previous seasons, I've usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the 5th season, though, I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, and my own personal reconnaissance around town, by the time the first episode aired, I already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Joel, Geoff, Ellen, Julie, Susan, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all of them.

I had heard from Rick that they were filming on Loynes. After the scene aired, I heard from Ellen Coleen, who both ID'ed the driving scene as Loynes.  (Thanks, Rick Ellen & Coleen!)

Google StreetView made it easy to pinpoint the exact spot, and the directions he was driving. And then I went there in person and shot the photo you see above, as well as photos for the other scenes shot on Loynes.
