Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
A. A bar, and a hangout for the Columbian drug cartel.
Q.
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode 5, of Season 7, "Swim Deep".
Ukrainian mob boss Isaak is stalking Dexter - or so he thinks.
In reality, Dexter knows he is being followed, and he's leading Isaak into danger.
Dexter walks into a Mateo's, a bar run by the Columbian drug cartel, who are mortal enemies of Isaak's own Koshka Brotherhood.
Not knowing who owns the bar, Isaak follows him in.
By
then, Dexter has disappeared out a back exit, but Isaak finds himself
surrounded and about to be killed by a number of angry Columbians.
We
see the bar later, when Debra, Dexter and Miami Metro show up, and find a
bloody crime scene, with a number of dead Columbians scattered about the
bar.
As
Dexter reconstructs what happened, we learn that Isaak managed to
single-handedly kill all of the Columbians ("Terminator"-style, in Debra's words) - and
survived with only a flesh wound.
However,
that flesh wound left Isaak's blood behind on the floor, as evidence
that he was the shooter - something that will later lead to his arrest.
In
Episode 7, "Chemistry", the Miami Metro crew return to the bar, after
Quinn gets rid of the blood evidence against Isaak. They hope to
find more blood there.
But when they enter, they find the bar has been deliberately contaminated with sewage (by the Koshka Brotherhood).
Angel
tells Quinn that he knows he was in the evidence locker, and virtually
asks if he stole the evidence. Quinn denies it, and Angel accepts his
denial.

Q.
What is it actually in real life?
A. A bar, but not in Miami.
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. This is the Whitehorse Inn, a cocktail lounge at 1532 N. Western Ave, in Hollywood.
It shares a building with a
Super-8 Motel, at the southeast corner of Western Ave & Harold Way,
two blocks east of the Hollywood Freeway.
At the start of the scene, when we see Dexter driving up to the bar, he is heading north on Western Avenue, just past Sunset Boulevard.
He pulls over to the east side of Western, and puts a coin in the (real) parking meter there. But they
painted fake graffiti on the front wall of the bar, to give it a seedy
look. And they added a red flowering bush to the white iron fence that
surrounds the parking lot next door.
The bar is within a half mile of several other Dexter locations from this season, including Nadia's apartment, Dexter's fake front lawn, and the gas station where Debra filled a gas can (to burn down Travis's church).
Here is an aerial
photo of the location. And here is a map
link.
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the now, though,
I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode airs, I
already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Elaine, Mia, Joel, Susan, Eric, Jeff, Kerry & others. My thanks to all of
them.
This tip came from Rick. (Thanks, Rick!)
