Dexter Filming Locations: The Coffee Stand

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: The Coffee Stand

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A small coffee/snack stand.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere near the Miami Metro police station.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. Only once, in Episode 2, of Season 6, "Once Upon a Time..."

Debra has been given the promotion (to lieutenant) that had been promised to Angel, and in this scene, she breaks the bad news to him.

So she takes him out for coffee to tell him.

    He reacts well, considering...

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A parking lot.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. They built this snack stand in a small parking lot next to another location they were using.

You'll find the narrow lot in between the Vasquez Dental Clinic (at 5618 Figueroa Street) and a Moda Plus clothing store (at 5612 Figueroa), in the Highland Park section of Los Angeles.

That's only a half-mile southwest of the unique home used as Professor Gellar's church, and right next door to the building used as the barber shop / kill room.

It is on the southeast side of the street, near the Highland Theatre.

It appears that they also added the mural and mailbox seen behind Debra, plus the tables, of course.

Here is a Google StreetView of the lot - behind the gate  (click on it to see the panorama):

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In previous seasons, I've usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the 6th season, though, I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan, Jason, Elaine, Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all of them.

This time, I found it easily via the scene's background:

As you can see in the screencap above, one of the stores seen behind Debra and Angel, across the street, has a sign reading "Rock Factory", in a distinctive font.  (Another store nearby had a name that began with "YOON".)

So I simply Googled for "Rock Factory" and found it at 5627 Figueroa (near a store named "Yoona").  Once in Highland Park, I knew they had filmed at the Moda store there for the barber shop scene, so I simply rotated the StreetView around from the Rock Factory, and sure enough, there was Moda and that narrow parking lot.
