DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Angel & Quinn's bar

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A bar.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 1, of Season 7, "Are You...?".

After a long day, following the murder of detective Mike Anderson, Debra tells Angel & Quinn to take the rest of the day off.

Angel says he could use a drink, so they head to a nearby bar.

In the scene, we see them seated at the bar. They buy drinks, then make a toast "to Mike".

They then get into a slightly hostile discussion about Quinn's possible transfer, his going to his union rep, and his drinking problem.

Angel admits he never actually put Quinn in for a transfer, and Quinn admits he never really contacted his union rep - and that he isn't in an alcohol rehab program.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A bar.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. This scene was shot in a tiny bar in Highland Park originally called "The Little Cave", but which has recently had a major makeover, and has been renamed "La Cuevita" - which means (what else?) "The Little Cave" in Spanish.

It's located at 5922 N. Figueroa Street. And the name fits with the new Mexican grotto theme.

Highland Park is about half way between downtown L.A. and Pasadena.

Now, if Highland Park sounds like a long way to go for a short bar scene, bear in mind that they were already filming there for this 1st episode, shooting those shocking scenes at Travis's church, as well as for the flashback scenes at Harry's house.

Here are some photos of the interior, from the bar's website:

Here is an aerial photo of the location.  Here is a Google StreetView.
And here is a map link.

The opening exterior establishing shot of the bar was actually filmed in Miami Beach.

It's an Italian Restaurant named "Hosteria Romana", and is located at 429 Espanola Way.

Here's their website, and here's a StreetView that matches that (top) establishing shot.

    Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

      A.  In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the now, though, I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode airs, I already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Elaine, Mia, Joel, Susan, Eric, Jeff, Kerry & others. My thanks to all of them.

Rick gave me this one, and it's a good thing, since the entrance is so small, you could drive right past it without noticing it - let alone guessing that a TV show had been filmed here.
And better yet, he even tracked down that exterior shot of the Miami restaurant.  My hunch was that it would turn out to be in Miami Beach, on either Ocean Drive or Collins Ave, where there are a lot of sidewalk bars & cafés.  I searched those two streets, end to end, but came up empty.  Rick found it just a couple of blocks west of those streets, on Espanola Way. (Thanks, Rick!)
