The Hollywood Squares

Seeing Stars: Becoming a Star (for 15 Minutes)

(323) 850-0707

The new "Hollywood Squares" features Whoopi in the coveted center square position once held by the late, great Paul Lynde. The emphasis here, as before, is on the celebrities and their witty answers, but there's also a chance for contestants to win a significant amount of cash.

Whoopi has pull within the industry, so so far there have been some major stars serving as contestants on the game show, including her Comic Relief friends Billy Crystal and Robin Williams, plus the likes of Sharon Stone, Rosie O’Donnell, Whitney Houston,Garth Brooks, William Baldwin, Cindy Crawford, Jenna Elfman,Roseanne, Luke Perry, Danny Glover, Melanie Griffith, Jason Alexander, Lea Thompson and Antonio Banderas.

The host/quizmaster this time around is Tom Bergeron.

How is the show played? It's basically a giant tic-tac-toe board, with stars filling the squares. The two contestants essentially play a game of tic-tac-toe, filling in the squares with x's and o's. The trick is that to put an x (or an o) in a square, you must first decide whether the contestant occupying that square is telling the truth when he or she answers a question. Often, the celebrity contestants bluff. Sometimes they tell the truth. You have to guess. Connect three in a row, and you win. (Hint: some celebs tend to bluff more than others - watch the show and learn who you can trust.)

The show is taped at CBS TV City, near Farmers Market. It airs locally at 7 p.m. on KCBS, Channel 2. To become a contestant on the show, just call (323) 850-0707 and leave your name and number. They'll put you on a waiting list and call you back for an audition. You must be 18 years old or older.
