Hairdressers of the Stars

Seeing Stars: Where the Stars Shop

The most famous hairdresser in Hollywood is probably JOSE EBER: A TV personality in his own right, Jose's opulent Beverly Hills salon (inside the Two Rodeo Drive center) attracts celebrity customers such as Cher, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Meg Ryan and Farrah Fawcett.
(310) 278-7646.

But Beverly Hills boasts many other salons that are also popular with the stars, most clustered in the "Golden Triangle" of streets around Rodeo Drive:

  • CHRISTOPHE (at 348 N. Beverly Drive) is the man responsible for giving former President Bill Clinton the infamous $200 haircut that caused the President so much bad publicity during his first year in office; Barbra Streisand sent First Lady Hillary Clinton to Christophe's Beverly Hills salon for a new do - one she changes regularly. Christophe also has done the hair of stars such as Nicole Kidman, Sally Field, Goldie Hawn, Ted Danson, and Kate Capshaw . His hair colorist, Lori Goddard, has worked with Farrah, Rosanna Arquette and Markie Post. One hair colorist is Matthew Boger, whose long-term clients have included Sharon Stone, Lauren Holly, Liv Tyler, and Julliette Lewis. (310) 274-0851.
  • ALLEN EDWARDS (216 26th Street, in Brentwood) has cut hair for the likes of Dustin Hoffman, Donna Mills, Geena Davis, Suzanne Somers, Raquel Welch, Anne Bancroft and Sharon Stone. He originated Farrah Fawcett's famous 70's shag. In 1995, during the O.J. Simpson trial, he gave prosecutor Marsha Clark a new hair style which got a lot of media attention. (310) 394-2878.
  • MICHAEL CANALE (214 N. Canon Drive), worked with Jennifer Aniston from the early start of her career on "Friends," and has also worked with Denise Richards ("Wild Things"), pop star Shakira, Shannon Elizabeth ("American Pie"), Jeri Ryan ("Star Trek", "Boston Legal"), singer Faith Hill, Sela Ward ("Sisters), Amanda Bynes ("What I Like About You ") and Blythe  Danner. (310) 273-8080.
  • FEKKAI (440 N. Rodeo Drive), a relative newcomer in Beverly Hills, but not with the Show Biz crowd. Frédéric Fekkai has been styling hair at Fifth Avenue & 57th Street in New York for the likes of Sandra Bullock, Barbra Streisand, Kate Capshaw and Rita Wilson (Mrs. Tom Hanks). Now his famous clients can visit him closer to home. Ellen Degeneres and Anne Heche did when they were an item. So have Ashley Judd, Debra Messing (of "Will & Grace"), Jessica Biel (of "7th Heaven") and Melanie Griffith. You can too, if you don't mind long waits (he's only in town one week out of each month) and if you don't mind paying $300+ per haircut. (less if someone else at his salon does the work.) (310) 777-8700.
  • JOSEPHMARTIN (421 N. Rodeo Drive). The "Joseph" in JosephMartin is Joseph Kendall, a famed haircutter whose celebrity clients have included Julia Roberts, Oliver Stone and Hugh Grant . The salon also offers Barron Matalon, who specializes in the kind of soft, layered cuts of the sort he gave Jane Fonda. His other clients have included Debra Winger and Madeline Stowe. (310) 274-0100.   (http://www.josephmartin.com)
  • NANCE MITCHELL (330 N. La Peer Drive) has given facials to Elizabeth Taylor, Carrie Fisher and Tom Selleck. (310) 276-2722.
  • MICHAELJOHN (414 N. Camden Drive): Rene Thomas gives facials to Barbra Streisand and Michelle Pfeiffer. (310) 2788333.
  • LOUIS LICARI COLOR GROUP (459 W. Canon Drive) is a colorist whose clients have included Sharon Stone, Kim Basinger, Ali MacGraw, Michelle Pfeiffer and Sherilyn Fenn. Their Lana Chirco cuts hair for Kim Basinger, as well as for Ellen Barkin and others. (310) 247-0855.
  • CHRIS MCMILLAN SALON (8944 Burton Way) Chris McMillan did many of Jennifer Aniston's "Friends" cuts, and also straightened her hair for her wedding to Brad Pitt. Fellow "Friends" Courtney Cox and Matthew Perry also get their hair done here. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos is another of his clients. He was also part of the crew on ABC's 2003 series, "Extreme Makeover" (310) 285-0088.
  • UMBERTO (416 N. Canon Drive) offered Stuart Gavert, a hair colorist whose celebrity clients have included as Faye Dunaway and Christina Applegate (at $200 and up), plus Je Lum, a manicurist who has done the nails of Whitney Houston, Alec Baldwin, and Kim Basinger. (310) 274-6395.

    • Stuart Gavert has since left Umberto and has opened his own salon, called GAVERT-ATELIER, which is located at 9666 Brighton Way, in Beverly Hills. (310) 858-7898.

  • URSULA ADAM INSTITUT DE BEAUTE (120 N. Robertson Blvd.) provides facials to Melanie Griffith and Christopher Reeve. (310) 652-9252.

  • CIA COIFFEURS (214 N Canon Drive); Before comic/actress Sandra Bernhard hit the big time, she worked as a manicurist at this Beverly Hills salon, doing the nails of celebrity customers such as Jaclyn Smith, Victoria Principal and Dyan Cannon. (310) 273-8722
  • And if you ever wondered where former President Ronald Reagan got his well-known hair cut, his former barber was at DRUCKERS (now called "Druckers-Gornik") at 9740 Wilshire Blvd, at the southwest corner of Wilshire & Linden Drive. The late Mr. Drucker (who passed away in May of 1998 at age 91), was literally the 'barber to the stars'. He cut the hair of Clark Gable, Tyrone Power, Danny Kaye, Spencer Tracy, Orson Welles, George Raft, Frank Sinatra and Bugsy Seigel. (310) 274-7131.
