Seeing Stars: Live on Stage

24 N. Mentor Avenue,
Pasadena, CA. / (626) 577-1894

This Pasadena comedy nightclub and restaurant has been in business for over 50 years, making it the oldest comedy club in the United States.
Founded in 1960, the building formerly housed an ice factory (hence its unusual name). It then became a club featuring folk singers, and finally evolved into a venue for stand-up comics.

Tim Allen ("Home Improvement") made his L.A. debut here.

Lily Tomlin created her 'Edith Ann' character at the Ice House ("...and that's the truth.")

Its stage has featured David Letterman, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Bob Newhart, Pat Paulsen, Steve Martin, the Smothers Brothers, Gallagher, Soupy Sales, Paula Poundstone and Jay Leno, among other stand-up comics.

Ice House regulars include Dennis Miller, Dana Carvey, Bill Maher, Bob Saget, and Bobcat Goldthwait. Over 50 live comedy albums have recorded here.

The Ice House is also home to the hit VH-1's series, "Stand-Up Spotlight" originally starring Rosie O'Donnell. The theater seats only 200, and the small setting provides everyone with a great view of the stage.

They also feature impressionists and magicians, and their shows tend to be longer than at other comedy clubs. And you can have dinner before the show at their restaurant, called "Comics."

Cover: $2.50-$11.50. Two drink minimum. 18 & over. Free parking. Reservations encouraged at (818) 577-1894. Closed Mondays.

Getting there: The Ice House is located on the east side of downtown Pasadena, just one block north of Colorado Blvd (home stretch of the Rose Parade), on Mentor Avenue, and one block east of Lake Ave.
