The location: Jess's house.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. The home of Jess Sathers.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. In or near Newport Beach.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Season 3, Episode 18 ("The Undertow").

Jess Sathers, Trey's troubled ex-girlfriend, shows up unexpectedly at Ryan's place, and delivers a birthday present from his brother Trey (who has apparently gotten out of prison).

Curious about what's up with Trey, Ryan later pays a visit to Jess's palatial home. He ignores her obvious efforts to seduce him, and eventually learns that Trey is now dealing blackjack at a casino and trying to stay out of trouble.

Later, Jess calls Ryan back to her house, when she's having problems with a stalker (a troublesome ex-boyfriend).

Ryan gets rid of the guy, then sticks around overnight to make sure she's safe (but doesn't sleep with her).

In the morning, we see him join her out on by the pool, where she gets a surprise call from Trey. She offers Ryan the phone (to talk to his brother), but Ryan obviously has mixed feelings about that, and declines.

She tells Ryan that Trey wants to get back with her, and she's clearly considering it, despite the fact that she was supposedly trying to change her life.  She complains that she's alone, her parents inattentive, and makes another attempt to interest Ryan in sticking around. But he isn't biting. He tells her to call some of her USC girlfriends for company, and he leaves.

Later, while he's on a date with Sadie Campbell, Ryan gets a phone call telling him that Jess has locked herself in her poolhouse, during a party, and that the problem boyfriend is back. So Ryan shows up at her house again, after dark.  A party in underway. She lets him into the poolhouse, but she's sloppy drunk and crying about needing him to take care of her. Ryan comforts her, but she quickly tries to turn that into a make-out session.

Just then, her stalker boyfriend barges in. Ryan tells him to take it outside, and they end up fighting by the pool. Ryan quickly gets the best of it, but when the boyfriend tells him its none of his business, Ryan agrees, and heads for the exit.

Jess tries to stop him from leaving, but he tells her that she needs to stop dating guys like Trey, and that he (Ryan) needs to stop dating girls like her.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. An actual home - just a long way from Newport.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This home is located at 1355 Potrero Road, in the Hidden Valley area of Thousand Oaks, CA.

That's a long way from most other OC locations,

The 17,000 square-foot mansion sits on 40 acres of land, northeast of Malibu, west of Westlake Village.

[ WarningThis is a private home.  Do not trespass on their property, knock on their door,
or do anything else that might disturb the residents!

( In 2007, not long after this scene was filmed here, a major movie star bought this mansion... an Academy Award winner who got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that same year. )

Here is a map link. And here is an aerial photo.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. I assumed this mansion was somewhere in Malibu, but I was unable to find it, and eventually wrote it off as a lost cause.

Fortunately, in early 2010, a fan named Geoff, who had just found several other missing OC locations, tracked it down, and sent me an aerial photo of the home.

It took me about half an hour to track down the exact address (and its celebrity owner).

    (Thanks, Geoff!)
