Thursday August 2, 5:19 pm Eastern Time
Press ReleaseSOURCE: Universal PicturesNicolas Cage, Academy Award(R)-Winning Star of 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin,' To Be Honored With Hand and Footprints Ceremony at Mann's Chinese Theater Tuesday, August 14
Nicolas Cage is one of the few movie stars working today with the ability to succeed in just about every motion picture genre. Cage is equally at home handling comedy, in such films as ``Peggy Sue Got Married,'' ``Raising Arizona,'' ``Guarding Tess'' and ``Honeymoon in Vegas,'' as he is tackling highly dramatic material, such as ``Birdy,'' ``Bringing Out the Dead'' and ``Leaving Las Vegas,'' for which he won the 1995 Oscar® for Best Actor and every other major acting award that year. He has been the romantic hero of ``The Family Man,'' ``City of Angels,'' ``Moonstruck'' and ``It Could Happen to You,'' the action hero of ``Gone in Sixty Seconds,'' ``Con-Air'' and ``The Rock,'' the anti-hero of ``Snake Eyes,'' ``Eight Millimeter'' and ``Wild at Heart'' and the menacing villain of ``Face/Off'' and ``Kiss of Death.'' His portrayals have run the gamut from punk rocker in ``Valley Girl'' to vampire in ``Vampire's Kiss.'' Cage was honored this year at ShoWest with the first-ever Distinguished Decade of Achievement in Film Award for his memorable, influential and multi-dimensional performances in films over the past 20 years. He will be honored later this year with the American Cinematheque's Moving Picture Ball Award. Cage can be seen this fall in ``Windtalkers,'' followed by ``Adaptation,'' starring Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper. Under his Saturn Pictures banner, Cage produced last year's acclaimed feature ``Shadow of the Vampire,'' and he next produces ``The Life of David Gale,'' starring Kevin Spacey, which Alan Parker will direct for Universal Pictures. John Madden (``Shakespeare in Love'') directs Cage and Penelope Cruz (``All About My Mother'') in ``Captain Corelli's Mandolin,'' an epic tale about the enduring hope of love and the devastating brutality of war, set amid the Italian occupation of Greece during World War II. Based on the classic novel by Louis de Bernieres, the screenplay is adapted by Shawn Slovo, with Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Kevin Loader and Mark Huffam producing. From Working Title Films, ``Captain Corelli's Mandolin,'' a co-production of Universal Pictures, StudioCanal and Miramax Films, opens nationwide on Friday, August 17. Universal Pictures is a unit of Universal Studios (www.universalstudios.com), a part of CANAL+, the TV and Film division of Vivendi Universal, a new global leader in media and communications.
