The Abandoned Mall ![]() In Episode 5 of Season 3 ("Frayed"), while the kids are on a bus road trip, we see flashbacks of a major confrontation in an abandoned mall, between Scott, Derek and Deucalion's Alpha Pack. Knowing that the Alphas plan to attack, Derek plans a pre-strike on Deucalion alone. But when they meet Deucalion at the abandoned mall, he isn't alone. A major battle breaks out, and Scott's side is losing before Allison shows up with her bow & arrows and helps turn the tide. Scott is badly wounded in the battle, and Derek appears to fall to his death. ![]() This scene was shot at an actual deserted mall: The Hawthorne Plaza Mall 12000 Hawthorne Boulevard, in Hawthorne, CA The city of Hawthorne is in the South Bay area, near the interchange of the San Diego (405) and Century (105) Freeways, just south of Inglewood. This large, enclosed shopping mall (simply called "The Hawthorne Mall" by most locals) opened in 1977. But by the 1990's it began to fail, a victim of both the low income of the surrounding neighborhood, and the messy construction of the new 105 Freeway. The mall finally closed for good in 1999, and is now an empty shell of its former self. The Hawthorne Mall has been used for filming on a number of occasions, including the 2002 Tom Cruise sci-fi epic, "Minority Report", as well as the 2011 film "The Green Hornet". Here is a Google StreetView panorama of the exterior of the Hawthorne Mall: Here is an aerial photo. And here is a map link. ![]() |
