0:00:50: The movie opens with a shot of Mrs. P.L. Travers (the author of
"Mary Poppins") as a child, at home in Maryborough, Australia, in 1906.

This was actually shot in the  rose garden at the Los Angeles County Arboretum,
at 301 Baldwin Avenue, in Arcadia, CA.  The Arboretum is right across the street from
Santa Anita Racetrack, about 16 miles northeast of downtown L.A.

The rose garden is located inside the  "historic circle", south of the
Queen Anne Cottage, and southeast of the Coach Barn. 

At 0:06:33, you can see the top of the Queen Anne cottage sticking up in
the background (below), as the father & daughter get up and leave.

0:02:07: The movie then cuts to 1961, where we see the author's home in London.

Surprisingly, they actually went to London, England for this scene - making it
the only scene in the movie which wasn't shot in Southern California.

This is 29 Shawfield Street, in Kensington, London,
less than two miles (southwest) from Buckingham Palace.

The house is on the east side of the street. (The cherry trees are an addition,
a nod to the "Cherry Tree Lane" address of the Banks' family in the book.)

0:07:35: We return again to the P.L. Travers' Australian Victorian childhood,
but this time you get to see the house where her family lived.

It's moving day, and the family is leaving for a new home, far away.

At 0:08:35, you'll find a nice wide shot of the home, plus the neighboring house.



This scene was shot at the Heritage Square museum, at 3800 Homer Street,
in the Arroyo Seco / Lincoln Heights area between downtown L.A. and Pasadena.

The outdoor museum is comprised a number of Victorian homes, that were saved from
demolition over the years and moved to this spot, just south of the Pasadena Freeway.

This particular home was originally known as the "Shaw House".  It was later renamed as the
the "Valley Knudsen Garden Residence" in honor of a woman who worked for preservation.

This Victorian home was built in L.A. in 1877, and was moved to the
museum grounds for preservation in 1970.

(That large green Victorian next door is Hale House, the crown jewel of the museum.)

The museum is open to the public on weekends.

At 0:08:54, as the family walks from their home, the camera switches seamlessly from the
museum homes to a Victorian city scene, representing downtown Maryborough.



But if you've been on the Universal Studios Hollywood tram tour, you've most likely seen this place in person.
  It is actually part of the

, just west of the famous "Hill Valley" Courthouse seen in "Back to the Future".

0:09:09: The family arrives at a railroad station: a sign tells us it is
the "Maryborough Station of the Australia-Gold Coast Railway".



But this is actually the Santa Anita Depot, back at the Los Angeles County Arboretum,
the public garden at 301 N. Baldwin Ave, in Arcadia, CA‎.

This train station lies at the far southeast corner of the Arboretum, and
can be seen when driving down the (west side) of Baldwin Ave.

It's an 1890's building that used to  be slightly north of the Arboretum, but was
disassembled and moved to the Arboretum (then reconstructed) in 1970.

0:10:31: Back in the movie's present day (1961), P.L. Travers arrives at a Los Angeles airport.

Now this should be either LAX or the Burbank Airport.

But in fact, they shot it at the old (now-closed) Terminal One,
at the Ontario International Airport., in Ontario, CA.

(Just as well, I suppose, since the scene is supposed to take place in 1961.)

The old terminal is located on Moore Way, just west of the modern Terminal 2.

Ontario Airport is used frequently in movies and TV shows.
( If you saw the (terrible) finale of "Dexter", Ontario played the
airport where Dexter & Hannah were trying to escape from Miami.)

The same terminal is seen again later in the film, at 1:32:51, when she leaves,
only with a fake LAX theme building inserted in background.

This was shot heading north on the 5200 block of Fairfax Ave, in Baldwin Hills.

(Don't confuse this Fairfax Ave with the Fairfax where you'll find Farmers Market.
The two spots are worlds apart, separated by 7 miles, and by
a wide swatch of barren oil refinery land.)

0:11:41: Along the way to the hotel, they pass a car wash.



This is the Lakeside Car Wash, at 3700 W. Riverside Ave, in Burbank, CA.

That's just south of the Ventura (134) freeway, and just a block north of Warner Bros. Studio,
in the same Valley town where you'll also find NBC studios and Disney studios.

0:11:51: She speaks with the driver as they drive through a residential  neighborhood.,
complaining about the heat, and then slamming the sliding glass door in his face.



They filmed this scene on the 5000 block of 58th Place, in the Ladera Heights area of Los Angeles.

In the screencap above, they are heading west on 58th Place, just east of La Tijera Blvd.

( It's a fairly standard residential street, but it is only a mile south of Fairfax Ave, where
they earlier filmed the oil wells scene - which is probably why they chose this one.)

0:12:29: The limo arrives at her hotel.

This is the "Pink Palace", the Beverly Hills Hotel, at 9641 Sunset Boulevard, in Beverly Hills.

In the screenshot above, the camera is looking northwest from Sunset at Beverly Drive.
