Marvel's Agents of SHIELD - Filming Locations: Okinawa, Japan

The Southern California locations where Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is filmed.

Episode 6, of Season 2 ("A Fractured House")

The U.N. has been attacked by Hydra men posing as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

They used new weapons based on alien Obelisk technology, small
discs which caused their victims' bodies to disintegrate.

New S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Bobbi Morse believes that the weapons were probably
the creation of someone she knows: Hydra demolitions expert Toshiro Mori.

So, S.H.I.E.L.D. goes to his lab in Okinawa, Japan.

Instead of attacking the installation outright, they opt to use Bobbi's former
Hydra cover, and for her to infiltrate the place and speak with Toshiro.

After a little chit chat, they kiss, which angers her ex-husband, Lance,
who (along with Melinda May) is watching via video surveillance.

Over tea, they discuss the new weapons. Toshiro calls them "splinter bombs"

Along the way, things take a wrong turn. Lance intercepts a message that tells him that
Hydra has just found out that Bobbi is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and they plan to kill her.

He and May rush into the place and, along with Bobbi, take out the bad guys.

As you might expect, they didn't go all the way to Japan to film this.

This scene was shot at The Huntington Library, Art Gallery & Gardens,
at 1151 Oxford Road, in San Marino, CA.

That is just south of Pasadena, CA.

The former property of real estate baron Henry Huntington, this grand estate has
been the location of many a movie & TV show over the years.

The Huntington has always had a beautiful Japanese Garden, so one might assume
that this scene would be shot at that Japanese Garden - but it wasn't.

Actually, this scene was shot in the teahouse at their new Chinese Garden, known as
Liu Fang Yuan ("the Garden of Flowing Fragrance"), one of the largest Chinese gardens
outside China. (You'll find it just north of the Japanese garden).

I visited there in 2011 and shot these photos:

As you can see, the teahouse sits on the edge of a small lake, and is
surrounded by other, smaller Chinese pavilions and artwork.

There is also an interior courtyard, where some of the S.H.I.E.L.D. scenes were shot.
