Seeing Stars: Where the Stars are Immortalized

Update: Unfortunately, this South Coast branch of Planet Hollywood closed in late 1999.

In December of 2000, the restaurant building itself was torn down.

(The article below was written shortly after the Wall of Fame was unveiled to the public.)

If you're down in Orange County there is now a great place to see the handprints of movie stars.

With the opening of the new Wall of Fame at the Planet Hollywood restaurant at South Coast Plaza, Grauman's Chinese Theatre is finally getting some serious competition in the celebrity cement business.

The exterior front wall of this celebrity-owned restaurant is covered with 2'x2' cement panels containing the imprints of the hands (and sometimes the feet) of a host of big name celebrities.

Some of these stars have already been immortalized at the Chinese Theatre, such as Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Jimmy Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, Steven Seagal, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

But if you've already seen the Chinese Theatre courtyard, you may be more interested to discover the prints of a number of major stars who can't be found at Grauman's, including Kevin Costner, Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Whitney Houston, Geena Davis, Sean Connery, Cher, Tom Selleck, Peter O'Toole, Diana Ross, Lauren Bacall, Arsenio Hall, Tom Arnold, Wesley Snipes, Dudley Moore, Macaulay Culkin, Jeremy Irons, Priscilla Presley, Michael J. Fox, Ron Howard, Patrick Stewart and Jim Belushi.

This Planet Hollywood wall also immortalizes a number of famous Hollywood couples (and former couples), including Meg Ryan & Dennis Quaid, Alec Baldwin & Kim Basinger, Don Johnson & Melanie Griffith, Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn, and of course the restaurant's co-owners Bruce Willis & Demi Moore (along with their other two restaurant partners: Sly Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.)

A few of the imprints provide a touch of humor. Lassie left her paw prints. "Freddy Krueger" (Robert Englund) left his claw marks. Bob Hope gave us imprints of his bare feet (and crossed golf clubs), while Dolly Parton left the marks of her long fingernails and a red lipstick kiss.

Most of these cement panels contain only handprints and a signature; only a few contain footprints. But each is marked with a small brass nameplate at the bottom, identifying the star, so you don't have to worry about not being able to make out their signatures.

Planet Hollywood is located in Orange County, across from the South Coast Plaza mall; the imprints are along the eastern (front) wall, near the entrance. You can see the imprints for free, without entering the restaurant.

Getting there: The original Southern California Planet Hollywood is located in South Coast Plaza Village, on the north side of Sunflower. Take the San Diego (405) Freeway south to the Bristol exit in Costa Mesa, go north to Sunflower, and turn left (west). The restaurant will be on your right (north) side. (See directions for South Coast Plaza mall.)
