Dexter Filming Locations: Tony's Garage

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Tony's Garage (murder)

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A residential garage.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 2, of Season 7, "Sunshine and Frosty Swirl".

Tony Rush is a bouncer who works at the Fox Hole strip club, which is owned by organized crime.

He was dating a stripper from the club (Kasia) who was later killed by mobster Viktor Baskov.

Kasia's dead body was discovered by Mike Anderson in the back of Viktor's car, resulting in Anderson getting killed by Viktor.

When Dexter kills Viktor at the airport, Viktor's employer, a rich Ukrainian mobster named Isaak, flies to the U.S. to find out what happened to him.

Another stripper, Nadia, tells Quinn that Tony was dating Kasia. When the police call him in for questioning, Tony crumbles under pressure and tells them Kasia left the club with Viktor.

When the police start looking for Viktor at the club, Isaak puts two & two together.

As this scene opens, we see Tony at home in his garage, working on his motorcycle, when Isaak and his henchman walk in.

Isaak pretends to be amiable, and asks Tony why he quit the Fox Hole, and why he talked to the police.  He asks if it was because of Kasia.

When Tony denies talking to the police, Isaak bluffs him, claiming he had him followed. It works, and Tony basically admits it.

Isaak asks if he was in love with Kasia, pretending to be sympathetic for his loss.

And then, without notice, Isaak stabs Tony through the eye with a screwdriver, killing him, then calmly walks from the garage.

His henchman reaches down and cleans his boss's fingerprints from the handle of the screwdriver (still embedded in Tony's eye).

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A residential garage.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. This is an actual garage, located behind an actual residential home, at 2919 E. 1st Street, in Long Beach, CA.

You can barely see the featured garage from the street, since it's located far in the back, at the end of the driveway on the left side of the house.

This Bluff Park neighborhood is familiar Dexter territory.

This location is just 2 1/2 blocks west of the house used as Dexter & Rita's home (where Rita was killed by Trinity).

And just one block away from the house where, in Season 5, Lumen killed Alex Tilden.

It's also close to Holly Benson's apartment and it's only about six blocks west of the Belmont Pier area, where they have filmed a number of scenes over the years, including the infamous snakes scene from Season 6.

I shot the photo below in 2012.

And here's a closer look at the featured garage in the back:

[Warning: This is a private home. Do not trespass on their property, knock on their door,
or do anything else that might disturb the residents. ]

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the now, though, I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode airs, I already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Elaine, Mia, Joel, Susan, Eric, Jeff, Kerry & others. My thanks to all of them.

Rick tipped me to this one.  I drove past while they were filming, and later returned to shoot the photo above.
