Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode 4, of Season 8, "Scar Tissue".
Dexter is stalking one of Dr. Vogel's former patients, A.J. Yates, whom he suspects might be the Brain Surgeon Killer.
In this scene, Dexter watches Yates outside an apartment house. He observes that Yates seems to be holding down a decent job as a cable installer for Sol-Ray Communications.
Yates pulls
a container full of equipment to his van, where he stops to enjoy a
Pepsi (in a prime example of shameless "product placement").
When Yates takes off his cap, Dexter spots an ominous, lengthy scar along the base of his skull - not unlike the kind of cuts left by the Brain Surgeon Killer on his victims.
Dex checks Vogel's notes, but sees nothing about Yates having had brain surgery. He wonders if the scar was the result of her "unconventional methods".
Q. What is it actually in real life?
Q. Where can I find it in real life?
A. This apartment house is located at 1146 Gordon Street, in Hollywood.
The name on the front reads Gordon Aire.
It's two blocks south of Sunset-Gower studios, where they film Dexter, and just north of Hollywood Forever cemetery, where they have shot a number of scenes over the years.
In this scene, Yates' van is parked on the east side of Gordon, facing north.
Over the course of 8 years, they have filmed a lot on Gordon Street (which runs along the east side of the studio), ranging from Doakes' apartment in Season One, to Arlene's house in Season 7.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In the early seasons, I
usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using
clues from the various scenes. By the now, though, I've developed
a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and let me know in advance when something is about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the new first episode airs, I
already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Suzi, Elaine, Mia,
Julie, Kerry, Joel, Eric, Jeff, & others. My thanks to all of them. Rick gave me this one, and its bright red trim made it easy to verify. (Thanks, Rick!).
