Dexter Filming Locations: Saxon steals a car

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Saxon steals a car

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. The parking lot of a market.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In the final Episode 12, of the final Season 8, "Remember the Monsters?".

Saxon is on the run, and is bleeding from a shoulder wound he acquired during a shootout with Debra.

In this short scene, he is walking through the parking lot of a market, his arm dripping blood.

He comes across a man getting into his pickup truck, and pistol whips him, stealing his truck.

(Don't miss the sly Ice Truck Killer reference at the opening of the scene.)

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. The parking lot of a market.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This is actually the parking lot of the
Top Valu market, at 970 W 1st Street, in
    San Pedro, CA.

San Pedro is actually part of Los Angeles, but is a long way from downtown, at the L.A. harbor.

The market is at the northwest corner of 1st and Bandini Streets. The portion of the parking lot shown in the scene is on the south side of the market, bordering 1st Street.

Why did they choose this store, when there are so many markets around?

    Because they were shooting nearby.

On that same day, July 8, they filmed the infamous boat shots (of Dexter carrying Deb down to the Slice of Life) at a dock in San Pedro.

That dock is about three miles to the southeast of this market, allowing them to shoot both scenes on the same day.

They also appear to have painted a graffiti-style mural on the side of the nearby gas station.

I shot the photo below in 2013.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the now, though, I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and let me know in advance when something is about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the new first episode airs, I already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Suzi, Elaine, Mia, Julie, Kerry, Joel, Eric, Jeff, & others. My thanks to all of them.

This tip initially came from Rick.  And after the episode aired, Graham emailed me the address, and said that he recognized the store since he drives past it to get to the 110 freeway.  (Thanks, Rick & Graham!)
