The
location: Paul's Funeral Church. |
Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
A. A church.
Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show? A. Somewhere
in Miami.
Q. When did we see it on the show? A. In Episode 2 (of Season 2), "Waiting To Exhale". Paul is Rita's abusive ex-husband. In the first season, he continued to be a nuisance, and when he made vague threats against Rita, Dexter eliminated him - not by killing him, but by getting him tossed back into prison on a false drug charge. In the second season, Paul is killed in a prison fight. Rita and her children go to his funeral, and drag a reluctant Dexter along with them. While the service is under way, Dexter imagines his dead brother, Rudy, sitting next to him in the pew.
Q. What is it actually in real life? A. An actual
church, but far from Miami.
Q. Where can I find it in real life? A. It is St. Peter's Catholic Church, and is located at 543 W. O'Farrell Street, in San Pedro (just east of Grand Ave.) It's
a half mile northwest of the housing
project seen in the same episode, just one street north of (and at
the other end of the alley from) Little
Chino's party house, and two blocks away from the spot where they filmed
the end of the tagger chase. Here is an aerial
photo of the location. And here is a map
link. I
shot the photo below in Sept. 2008 [
Important: This is a house of worship. If you
choose to visit, respect the sanctity of the church. ]
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was? A. I could tell
that it was a Catholic church from the interior. Since they spent so much
time filming at the San Pedro housing project
in this episode, I had a hunch that the church would be in the same general
area. So I checked to see how many Catholic churches there were nearby.
The closest one was St. Peter's, located just a few blocks to the
north.. I then Googled for photos of the St. Peter's interior, and
lucked into this wedding
photograph, which was shot inside the church. It was an
obvious match.
