Dexter: Original Sin Filming Locations: Dexter talks to Harry on phone outside of market

DEXTER: Original Sin Filming Locations - the actual places where the TV show Dexter: Original Sin was filmed.

The location: Dexter talks to Harry
on Pay Phone outside of Market

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A market or liquor store, with a pay phone out front

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A.  In or near Miami, Florida.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. We see this location in Episode 8, of Season 1.

Harry is off on a road trip to Tampa (with LaGuerta), and he’s worried about his daughter, Debra, who seems to be missing in action.

(He doesn’t realize that Deb is just off enjoying the high life with Gio aboard his yacht and on the beach at Bimini.)

So while he is outside Paul Petrie's house he pages Dexter, and in this scene he receives a call back from Dex on Harry’s car phone.

Dexter is calling from a pay phone outside of a convenience store (since this is 1991, when cell phones weren’t yet commonplace).

Harry asks Dexter what he has found out about the missing Debra, but Dexter hasn’t given it much thought, because he’s been obsessed with following Captain Spencer around.

Harry doesn’t want to hear anything about that, and he angrily scolds Dexter for not finding his sister.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A market or liquor store, (But  pay phone is a prop)

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. This scene was filmed at Village Market, at 11653 Moorpark Street, in North Hollywood.

That's at the northeast corner of Moorpark and Colfax Avenue, in the San Fernando Valley.

It is located about 5 miles southeast of the park where Laura & Harry got spotted by the cartel.

And it's only half a mile northeast of the Studio City studio where the show is filmed

Back in the early ‘90s, when Original Sin is set, there usually would have been a pay phone outside this kind of convenience market (along with a row of newspaper racks).

But in 2025, when everyone has a cell phone in their pocket, pay phones and phone booths are a vanishing breed (along with those newspaper racks).

So I assumed that the phone Dexter was talking on was a prop phone that had been temporarily set up by the production.

And I was right. When I found the location, the StreetView revealed that there was no real pay phone outside the market.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A.  The scene doesn’t show much of the location, as it focuses on Dexter at the pay phone. The only clue I could see in that scene were a few signs on the front of the building. One read “Liquor – Delicatessen”.

So I Googled for images of “Liquor Delicatessen, Los Angeles”, and among the images the search turned up was this one.

Even though you can only see a small part of the building on the right side of that photo, I recognized the same  “Liquor – Delicatessen” sign and the brick siding. Fortunately, the photo also included a larger sign, in the parking area, that read “Village Market”.

So that gave me the name of the market. Naturally, I Googled for the name.

It turns out there is more than one “Village Market” in the Greater Los Angeles area, but I took a look at all of them (via StreetView) and quickly discovered the matching one, in North Hollywood.

Here is a StreetView from Google:

Here is an aerial photo of the location.  And here is a map link.
