Dexter: Original Sin Filming Locations: The Fatal Intersection
The
location: The Fatal Intersection
Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
A. A residential intersection, the site of a fatal accident.
Q.
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
A. On the show, this street is right outside of "Mad Dog" Moretti's home, at 1682 Sunrise Street, in Miami, Florida.
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
The house shows up twice, first near the end of Episode 4, and then again at the start of Episode 5.
At the end of episode 4, Mad Dog manages to escape from Dexter's kill
table (which Dex had set up in Mad Dog's guitar room), struggles with
Dexter (losing a Clapton guitar along the way), and flees out into the night .
Next, we
see him running down the middle of the residential street at night, clad
only in his underwear — with Dexter in hot pursuit behind him.
Desperately fleeing Dexter, Mad
Dog makes the mistake of turning to look behind him. just as he runs
into the nearby intersection.
He loses his footing, and in that moment, a car speeds into the intersection and (unintentionally) runs him over.
With that sudden death, the 4th episode abruptly ends, with Dexter looking shocked.
The 5th
episode picks up where that scene left off, at the same intersection, in
the wake of the fatal accident. Only this time the camera is focused
on Dexter's perspective, as he watches the traumatized driver of the
Scout get out, in shock, and try to flag down a passing driver for help,
while Mad Dog's body lies in the middle of the street.
Dexter
realizes that Miami Metro will soon arrive to investigate the accident
scene, and he quickly calculates how long it will take them to get
there. He hurries back to Mad Dog's house, to try to remove the evidence of his kill room before the cops show up.
But the police show up earlier than expected, and Dexter almost gets
caught while hiding. But he lucks out and isn't discovered.
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
A. A residential street, but not in Miami.
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. When we see Mad Dog running down the street, the camera is looking north, as he is running south down the middle of Mound Ave (the 1000 block), in South Pasadena, CA, with Dexter right behind him.
The intersection he reaches is that of Mound Ave & Oxley Street.
The car that hits him is coming from the west, traveling east on Oxley Street, when Mad Dog appears out of nowhere and runs right into its path.
While we are seeing Dexter looking back at the accident scene, as the driver gets out of the car, the camera is now looking south up Mound Ave.
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. See my full explanation on the page about Mad Dog's house.
I was originally going to combine these two locations (the house and the
intersection) on the same page, but as I was doing so, the page started
getting too long and unwieldy, so I decided to break it into two
pages, to make it easier to read.
Since this scene is at night and very dark, details are hard to see in the original screencaps. but I used Photoshop to lighten the images and bring out as much detail as I could. (You can see the results below.)
While studying those
few clues, one thing I noticed was that the short wall on the left side
corner had been damaged and cracked, as if a car had run into it. ( Here
is a blow-up of that curb/wall
from the screenshot. ) So I spent a long time looking through
Long Beach neighborhoods for for that cracked corner wall, but of course
I never found it there. I was on the right track, but in the wrong
city.
However, when I finally located the actual intersection in South Pasadena, I was able to use that cracked wall
(visible in StreetView) to verify that I was indeed in the right spot,
and determine which way the camera was looking during the accident
scene. (The cracked curb turned out to be on the northwest corner of the
intersection.)
