Dexter Filming Locations: Lumen Buys a Knife

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Marketplace - Lumen Buys a Knife

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A Cuban-flavored marketplace.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 11, of Season 5, "Hop a Freighter", in a scene designed to highlight the budding romance between Dexter & Lumen.

The duo, still trying to figure out what to do about Jordan Chase, take a break and visit a colorful Hispanic marketplace.

After looking at jewelry at a vendors' stand, Dexter points out a small pocket knife with a pearl handle. Lumen likes it, so Dexter buys it for her.

As they walk through the marketplace, they discuss Quinn's obsession with Dexter.

Dexter, aware of the rising danger, tries to convince Lumen to leave, at least until he can set things straight. But she refuses.

She tells Dexter that they're a team, which reminds Dexter of something Debra had said about them earlier.  (He assures Lumen that Debra was only talking about the vigilantes, without knowing it was them.)

They walk to an outside corner of the market, where we can see boats docked behind them, and Lumen says that maybe they should both just take off - "hop a freighter".

They kiss, and she asks if he wants her to stay. He says he does.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A set created in the back of a seaside restaurant.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This faux marketplace was created on a covered patio in back of the Crusty Crab restaurant, at Ports O'Call Village, in San PedroCA.

The official address is 1146 Nagoya Way, #79.

Ports O'Call is a seaside shopping/dining village (which has seen better days). It sits right on the edge of the main channel at the Los Angeles harbor. They had filmed at the Village earlier this same season, for the scene where Dexter visited Lumen at a seaside cafe (and gave her plane tickets), so this was a return visit.

But that boardwalk cafe was located in the older, quainter south end of the Village, while the Crusty Crab is located at the newer, north end - just to the right (south) of a large Japanese gate, .

Behind the Crusty Crab, between the rear of that restaurant and the boat docks, is a covered patio. They set up the fake marketplace there. (You can glimpse the boats near the end of this scene.)

I shot the photos below in October 2010:

These shots show the front of the Crusty Crab restaurant.

The shot below, taken on the patio next door to the Crab, shows the same row of boats glimpsed during the scene.

Here is an aerial photo of the restaurant. And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  I was there where they set up the shoot.

Rick had let me know that they would be shooting down at Ports O'Call, so I dropped by on the morning of October 8, and found the usual collection of white studio trucks parked outside the Crusty Crab.

There was security out front of the restaurant, but I had a hunch that they probably wouldn't be watching the north side entrance to the patio area. So I walked through a Japanese-style gate into the next-door collection of shops, turned right, and was able to stroll from those shops right onto the Crusty Crab's patio without any problem.

Once there, I was surprised to find myself on a Dexter set, complete with colorful Cuban storefronts, produce stands, and even a small statue of the Virgin Mary (which you can see in the fourth screencap from the top). I shot a quick photo, which you can see below, and beat a hasty retreat...

(That statue of Mary can be seen on the left side, under the blue sign that says "Dock 4")
