Dexter Filming Locations: Lila's Drug Buy

The location: Lila's Drug Buy.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A basketball court (with a handball court visible nearby).

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 10, of Season 2 - "There's Something About Harry".

Lila (Dexter's crazy stalker) comes up with a plan to blackmail Dexter into staying with her.

In this short scene, she goes to a basketball court (in what appears to be a public park) where she meets a drug dealer. She asks him for rohypnol pills - commonly known as "roofies" or the "date rape drug". The dealer is surprised that a woman wants to buy them, but sells them to her, and she walks away.

Later, she has sex with Dexter's friend Angel (telling him she likes it rough), takes the pills, and then goes to the police, claiming that Angel drugged and raped her.

She then blackmails Dexter by saying she won't press charges against Angel if he stays with her.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A sports center in a public park - but not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. Both the basketball court and the handball courts are part of a small beachside park called Bayshore Playground, located at 14 54th Place, in Long Beach, CA.

( That's on "Bayshore Beach", on the east side of 54th Place, just north of E. Ocean Blvd, where the Long Beach peninsula joins the mainland - about a mile southeast of the Belmont Pier. )

The small beach park includes a small cluster of sporting facilities, including a racquetball court, basketball courts, a roller hockey rink, handball courts, a paddle tennis court, playground equipment for kids, and a co-op pre-school. (During the summer months, they tend to close off (to traffic) the adjacent 54th Place & Bayshore Drive, to keep the kids safe who play at the park.)

The producers shot the scene on the northwest court of the four basketball courts at the center.

They shot two other scenes at Bayshore Beach for this episode.  The scene where Debra and Lundy have lunch at a tropical cafe.
And the scene where Dexter plants evidence against Doakes was shot at the end of the adjacent pier.

The building seen across the street (in the fourth photo from the top) as Lila walks away, is an apartment house located at 1 54th Place.

Here is an aerial photo of the playground area. And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. This was an easy one for me.

Last season, they used this same general area for a restaurant scene (and it was also glimpsed in the background during a scene where Dexter arrived at the villain's lair), so I went there to check it out last year, and shot photos of the area.  I immediately recognized it when I saw it again in the new season.  (It's also possible to ID the buildings across 54th Place.)
