Dexter Filming Locations: Jonah Mitchell's House (in Nebraska)

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Jonah Mitchell's House

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A residential home.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. 1965 Walnut Street, in Kearney, Nebraska.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 7, of Season 6, "Nebraska".

Dexter heads out to Nebraska after learning that Arthur Mitchell's wife & daughter have been murdered in their home.

Arthur's son, Jonah, told police that he saw his father, the Trinity Killer, murder them.  But Dexter knows that can't be true, because he personally killed Arthur Mitchell.

After confronting Jonah at the hardware store where he works, and getting the same lies, Dexter goes to Jonah's house to look for proof that Jonah killed his family.

He starts to break in, but his imaginary dead brother, Brian, reminds him that people don't lock their doors in the midwest.  So he just walks in through the unlocked door.

Noticing that the blood at the crime scene has been cleaned with bleach, he uses a spray to detect bleach on the walls and other surfaces of the house.

He is interrupted when Jonah returns home, and catches him in the act.

Dexter confronts him with the fact that Trinity didn't kill anyone at the house.  Jonah begins to realize what's up, and asks Dexter if that's because he killed Trinity.  Dexter says yes, and accuses Jonah of killing his mother and sister.

Jonah bolts for the door and drives off in his car.  Dexter, spotted by a neighbor, doesn't give chase.  But he tells Brian that he's going to go set up a kill room.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A residential home, just not in Nebraska.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. They kept the house number the same.

But instead of "1965 Walnut Street", this house is really at 1965 Fletcher Ave, in South Pasadena, CA.

It's on the west side of the street, just south of Huntington Drive.

South Pasadena is about what you'd expect: a smaller town located just south of Pasadena (the city made famous by its annual Tournament of Roses Parade and the Rose Bowl game).

The residential neighborhoods of South Pasadena are often used by filmmakers because its streets have an old-fashioned, Midwestern look to them, with wood-frame houses and far fewer palm trees to get in the way.  That's why "Back to the Future" used it for several homes in "Hill Valley".  That's why its streets became "Haddonfield, Illinois" in the classic "Halloween", and "River Heights" in "Nancy Drew".   And now, it's Kearney, Nebraska...

(Speaking of Pasadena, they shot a scene in that city as well, for this episode.  It was the shot of Harry hitchhiking.

knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents.]

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In previous seasons, I've usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the 6th season, though, I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan, Jason, Elaine, Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, Jen, and others. My thanks to all of them.

Rick let me know about this one, and StreetView confirmed that it was the right place.  (Also, the street number is visible above the porch, in the opening shot of the house.)
