Dexter Filming Locations: Hannah's Flower Stand

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Hannah's Flower Mart.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A small flower stand where Hannah McKay sells her flowers.

(Not to be confused with the nursery in her back yard, where she grows the flowers.)

A sign says "Liberty Flowers - since 1964".  Yet another sign reads "A.L. Floral Co."  So this is probably some sort of outdoor farmers market, with multiple flower vendors.

What is unclear, however, is whether Hannah is there delivering her flowers to the vendors, or whether she runs a stand of her own at the mart.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

At the start of the scene, Dexter is watching her from a table at a beach café, so obviously, the flower mart is supposed to be near the beach.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 6, of Season 7, "Do the Wrong Thing".

Dexter is stalking Hannah, trying to find evidence to confirm his suspicions that she is a murderer.

When the scene opens, we see him sitting at a table at a beachside café, reading a book about Hannah titled "Love on the Run", written by true crime author Sal Price.

He is watching Hannah from a distance, as she unloads flowers from a van.

He is also having another of his imaginary conversations with Harry.  He argues that Hannah is a killer, while Harry insists that he doesn't have enough evidence to be sure.

Dexter says he believes she killed her husband.

When he starts to go talk to her, Harry reminds him that he just called her a murderer.  So he stops, saying "I need a peace offering."

In Episode 7, "Chemistry", we see her back at a flower stand. This time, she's being pestered by Sal Price, who's pressuring her into giving him an interview.  When he mentions Dexter hiding evidence to help her, Hannah tells Price to leave Dexter out of it.  She tells him to meet her at her house the next day.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. Just a small street next to a beach.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. They shot this very near the location of Angel's beach café, but they didn't actually use that restaurant.

Instead, they created a fake café, and a fake flower mart, right in the middle of 54th Place, the small street that runs along the west side of Bayshore Park and the beach, just north of Ocean Blvd, in Long Beach, CA.

They set up some tables & umbrellas, brought in some palm trees and a few low, colorful barriers in the background, to create Dexter & Harry's café.

They did this at the point where 54th Place makes a rather sharp turn, from southeast to south, right across from the building they used in Season One as the Ice Truck Killer's Lair.

Most of the time, when we're looking at Dexter & Harry in this scene, we're looking east/northeast, with the homes of Naples Island visible across the Alamitos Bay.

Then they filled the south end of 54th Place with flowers, for the actual flower mart shots.

This is a mere stone's throw from the Kayak Café, at Bayshore Park, where they later shot Angel's café (and a lot of other scenes over the years).

It's also just five short blocks southeast of the larger beach where they filmed the scene of Hannah & Dexter at Santa's Holiday Adventure.

Here is a Bing StreetSide view of 54th Place (looking north from Ocean Blvd).

Here is an aerial photo of the location.  Here is a Google StreetView.
And here is a map link.

( However, when they went back to Hannah's flower mart in Episode 7, they changed the location.

This time, they filmed it about a mile up the coast, on the beach, behind the southeast corner of the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool and the Belmont Pier, in Long Beach.  That's at 4000 E Olympic Plaza, Long Beach.  Here's a Bing view.
    )

UPDATE: The Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, mentioned in this article, was demolished in early 2015.  They discovered seismic deficiencies in the old building, so they torn it down. It will eventually be replaced with a new pool.

La Palapa, the patio café which was the location of several different "Dexter" scenes over the years, was attached to the west side of the pool building, so it was torn down as well.

Here, for the record, is a Google StreetView of the pool, when it was standing.

And here is a YouTube video of the historic building being torn down.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the now, though, I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode airs, I already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Elaine, Mia, Joel, Susan, Eric, Jeff, Kerry & others. My thanks to all of them.

I drove by when they were filming, and saw the south end of 54th Place filled with flowers.  But, at first, I assumed that the café portion of the scene was shot at Alfredo's Kayak Café.  It seemed the logical choice.

It wasn't until I studied the scene that I realized they had simply created this café in the middle of 54th Place.

If you look closely at this shot where Dexter gets up and starts walking towards Hannah...

...you can see a European-style no-parking sign on a pole (to the left), next to a low concrete wall (that the man in the yellow shirt is sitting on), with blue water and big homes visible in the background.

That no-parking sign is actually on a pole that also holds an arrow marking the sharp turn on 54th Place.  Here's is a Bing shot of that sign, as seen from 54th Place, and that low wall. The homes are obviously on Naples Island.  The tables and umbrellas are temporary props.
