Dexter Filming Locations: Haiti

The location: "Haiti"

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A view of the city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Haiti.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 9 (of Season 2), "Resistance is Futile".

Sgt. Doakes is on the run, after being suspected of being the Bay Harbor Butcher. He phones LaGuerta from Haiti, where he has taken Dexter's slides, to have the blood on them analyzed.

We see the identical shot again in episode 11, "Left Turn Ahead", in a scene where LaGuerta has gone to Haiti herself, checking for evidence to clear Doakes. She phones Lundy to talk about it.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A stock photo of Haiti - or so it would seem. But guess again.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil!

That's right, despite the caption on the screen clearly reading "Port au Prince, Haiti", it's actually a stock photo of Rio, not of Haiti.

Whoever was responsible for coming up with a stock photo of Haiti clearly bungled the simple job.

What's amazing is that they used the identical shot (complete with incorrect caption) a second time, in Episode 11, and yet no one in the Dexter production company recognized Rio, despite the photo containing a shot of the famous Sugar Loaf mountain.

Equally amazing is the fact that someone on the show seems to have edited the photo a little between episodes (as you can see when comparing the two shots at the top of this page), decreasing the color saturation and its yellow hue for the second showing. So they apparently caught the fact that the first photo was a little too yellow, but missed the fact that it was the completely wrong city, in the wrong country.

    Here's a comparison.

    This is Rio.

And this is the real Haiti:

( Normally, I don't point out technical goofs, but this is such a doozy that I couldn't resist. )

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. I wish I could say that I caught this one, but since I only list actual filming locations, and this was clearly a stock photo, I didn't pay much attention to it.

But a fan, Thyago Miranda, brought it to my attention, and sent me several comparison photos of Rio to drive the point home. (Thanks, Thyago!)
