Dexter Filming Locations: Bay Shore Country Club - Golf Course

The location: The Bayshore Country Club.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A golf course: the Bay Shore Country Club.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 10 (of Season 2), "There's Something About Harry".

Doakes tells Dexter that there is something about his foster father (Harry) that Dexter didn't know.

His curiosity peaked, Dexter goes to Bay Shore Country Club and confronts Police Captain Tom Matthewson on the golf course.

He asks him about his father, and the Captain reluctantly tells him that his father didn't die of a heart attack, that he committed suicide.

Later, Dexter (remembering how horrified Harry was when he walked in on him dismembering a victim) tells himself that he caused his father to kill himself.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A golf course. But not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. The scene was shot at the Penmar Golf Course, located at 1233 Rose Ave., in Venice, CA.

That's just east of Lincoln Blvd, and just southwest of the Santa Monica Airport.

It's a public course, nine holes, located on a long, narrow tract of land north of Rose Avenue.

I shot the photos below in Nov. 2008

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. It probably would have taken me ages to track down this golf course, considering how many golf courses there are in the L.A. area.

But fortunately, I lucked out on this one.

Last year, when I was still working on Season One locations, and still trying to find the location of "Flamingo Park", I phoned the city Parks Department to ask whether "Dexter" had filmed at Harbor Park. It hadn't. In fact, their rep told me that they hadn't filmed at any city park - except for Penmar Golf Course.

Since no golf course appeared in Season One, I assumed it would show up in Season Two, and made a mental note about it. And sure enough, late in the season, there it was.

All I had to do was match up the layout & buildings seen in the show's screencaps with those seen in aerial photos, to verify it.  Then I drove past to shoot a few photos.
