A. In Episode
1, of Season 6, "Those Kinds of Things".
Debra and Quinn are out on a date, drinking beer in a restaurant bar.
She tells him he's been acting weird lately. When he denies it, she points out that he's about to "drink the candle"
Quinn is trying to work up the courage to ask Deb to marry him.
He goes
into the restroom to compose himself, and while he's in there, a gunman
invades the restaurant and begins shooting up the place.
Debra reacts instantly, draws her own weapon, and returns fire.
She hits him several times, but he doesn't go down. She realizes the gunman must be wearing a bullet-proof vest.
So she aims for his legs, and when she hits her target, she runs and tackles him.
By this time, Quinn finally comes out of the restroom, sees what's going on and helps hold him down.
Once the crook is in handcuffs, Debra notices that she has been shot in the side.
All this time, a customer has been videotaping the action.
That, in
turn, leads to publicity, and to the Captain choosing her to become the
new luitenant, instead of Angel. And her new status of boss at the
police station causes some friction with her old friends.
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
A. A restaurant/bar.
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. This scene was shot inside the Gaslamp Restaurant & Bar, at 6251 E. Pacific Coast Highway, in Long Beach, CA.
It's at the corner of PCH & Loynes Drive. Loynes Drive is the street where they shot the scene of the fruit vendor's murder.
And that's just a half mile north of the restaurant where Angel took his sister, Jamie.
Not far from Cal-State Long Beach,
the Gaslamp caters to a college crowd (the place used to be called
"Live Bait"), so the emphasis here is on music, dancing &
entertainment. You'll find their website here.
This is a shot I took on May 24, 2011, of the Gaslamp's parking lot filled with Dexter trucks and crew:
And I shot this one from the left-turn lane of southbound PCH:
A. In previous seasons, I've
usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the 6th season, though,
I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I
already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan, Jason, Elainee Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all of them.
I knew from Rick that
they were shooting on Loynes, and while scouting that area, I noted
they had set up their base camp at the Gaslamp, and I shot the photos
you see above. Kerry also sent me a
photo of Gaslamp, but was chased away by an overly aggressive guard when
she tried to get a closer look. When the restaurant scene aired, I
recognized the distinctive bell-shaped lights inside the Gaslamp.
