Dexter Filming Locations: Dead Skunk

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Dead Skunk Pickup

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A residential street.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 3, of Season 5, "Practically Perfect".

Dexter is stalking serial killer Boyd Fowler, who works for the county in dead animal pickup.

In a previous scene at a diner, Dexter convinced Boyd to offer him a job picking up dead things.

Dexter then phoned in a fake call about a dead gator, in hopes of luring Boyd out to the kill room he had constructed at an abandoned Visitors Welcome Center.

In the next scene, we saw Dexter driving with Boyd on his route.

Finally, in this scene, we see the two of them outside their truck, on a residential street. They have stopped to pick up a dead skunk.

Boyd shovels the stinky B&W remains off the pavement and holds the smelly carcass under Dexter's face (noting that Dexter has a "nose of steel"), before dumping it in a barrel that Dexter holds open for him.

It has been two hours since Dexter placed the phone call about the gator, and he's beginning to believe that Boyd will never be dispatched to go there.

Just then, as Boyd is suggesting they go for lunch, Boyd finally gets a call about the supposed dead alligator, and sets out to get it.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A residential street - but not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This scene with the dead skunk was shot on Stevely Avenue, in Long Beach, CA, between Rosebay Street & Mezzanine Way. The house they are in parked front of is at 3163 Stevely Ave.

That's just west of (right across the street from) El Dorado Park, where they filmed the abandoned Visitors Welcome Center (where Dexter held Lumen captive), and close to the liquor store where Quinn tried to talk to Jonah Mitchell. And it's on the very same street (just a block or two away) as the safe house where the FBI guarded Jonah.

Kerry shot the photos below, of the actual filming of the scene, in July 2010:

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In previous seasons, I've usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the 5th season, though, I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, and my own personal reconnaissance around town, by the time the first episode aired, I already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Joel, Geoff, Ellen, Julie, Susan, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all of them.

This particular tip came from Kerry, who also sent us the photos this season of the El Dorado Park scenes and the nearby liquor store.
(And last season, got photos of the roll-over accident scene, not to mention Trinity's arcade.
    ..)

Kerry, who lives near El Dorado Park, was scoping out the above park locations, when she learned that they were filming nearby, over on Stevely.  So she hurried over and shot the above photos of the crew filming the skunk scene (including a good shot of Michael C. Hall walking with 'Boyd'.)    (Thanks, Kerry! Great work!)
