Dexter Filming Locations: The Club Mayan

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: The Club Mayan

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A nightclub.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 6, of Season 5, "Everything Is Illumenated".

Since the main suspect in the Santa Muerte cult decapitation murders, Carlos Fuentes, escaped from a raid on his apartment house, the Miami police are trying to find a way to track him down.

The only clue they have is a witness report that Fuentes had an eye-shaped tattoo on his hand.

Later, during a visit to the house of Fuentes' first victims, Debra discovers that the eye-shaped mark on his wrist wasn't a tattoo. It was actually a hand-stamp from a local nightclub called Club Mayan.

In these scenes, we first see an outside establishing shot of the club, followed by its busy interior, where Quinn sits at the club's bar, downing shots and flirting with women.

Rookie Sierra waits nearby - and Debra & Angel watch from a van parked outside (via a surveillance camera).

Debra grows jealous watching Quinn with other women, so when a call comes in about a possible homicide at a warehouse, she leaves.

Angel spots a woman in the club wearing a Santa Muerte charm. So he goes inside the club, flirts with her, and gets her to come with him. (He later turns her over to LaGuerta, to strike a deal for her to inform on Carlos Fuentes, in return for not being charged for drug offenses.)

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A nightclub.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This scene was shot at Boulevard3, at 6523 Sunset Blvd, in Hollywood.

It's located in the old Hollywood Athletic Club building, at the northeast corner of Sunset & Schrader Blvd.

The opening shot of the club's exterior is looking east on Sunset Blvd (from Schrader & Sunset).

For the interior scenes, it appears they draped the upstairs balcony with curtains.

When we see Debra & Angel's reconnaissance van parked outside the club, it's actually parked on Schrader Blvd, just north of Sunset.

The club has its own website at www.boulevard3.com.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In previous seasons, I've usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using various clues from the scenes.  By the 5th season, though, I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, and my own personal reconnaissance around town, by the time the first episode aired, I already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Joel, Geoff, Ellen, Julie, Susan, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all of them.

This particular tip came from Rick, who let me know that they were filming there. I recognized the exterior, then I checked the club's website for photos of the interior.to make sure the interiors scenes were filmed there as well. (Thanks, Rick!)
