Dexter Filming Locations: Det. Barbara phones Angel

The location: Detective Barbara Phones Angel

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Two unidentified outdoor locations where Barbara is seen talking on the phone to Angel.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Not specified, although the first appears to be near a marina.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. There are two locations, the first when Angel calls Barbara to ask her out, and the second when Barbara phones him. Both are seen in Episode 6 (of Season 3), "Si Se Puede",

Angel has a crush on vice Detective Barbara Gianna (Kristin Dattilo). In the first scene, he phones her (from the police station) while she's on the job.

We see her answer her cell phone in an outdoor location. She's wearing latex gloves, and in the background, police are loading a number of Asian suspects into the back of a police van.

Angel asks her if she'd be interested in going out on a date, and she tells him emphatically that she doesn't date... ever.

Angel asks her if she ever eats.  She says "sometimes", and seems somewhat amused.

She then tells Angel that "If I get hungry enough, I'll call you."

Despite the apparent brush-off, Angel seem pleased at the conclusion of the call.

There is a second, very similar scene later in the same episode, when Barbara phones Angel and asks if he's hungry.

He asks if she's asking him out on a date, and (although she obviously is) she reiterates that she never dates.

He plays along and agrees to meet her at a restaurant.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. Two spots: A marina and a public park.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. These two short scenes don't reveal much of the background, so I can only give you general locations, I can't pinpoint the exact spots the way I usually do.  With those apologies, here's what I can tell you:

    • In the first scene, when Angel phones Barbara at the crime scene, Barbara is standing next to the Shoreline Marina, which is southeast of Shoreline Village, in Long Beach. You'll find it on the water's edge, of course, south of Shoreline Drive, between Shoreline Village Drive and Linden Avenue.

(Angel's side of the conversation was filmed on the indoor police station set at the studio.)

They have filmed a number of other scenes at the Shoreline Marina, including the Wendell Owens murder site, and (from last season) the scene of Lila watching Dexter on his boat.

    • In the second scene, when Barbara phones Angel, she is standing in (or next to) Marina Green Park, in Long Beach, near the east end of that park. Marina Green Park is a long, narrow strip of green lawn which runs for blocks along the south side of Shoreline Drive, acting as a buffer between that highway and the marina parking lot to the south. I can be a bit more specific about this one. (My guess is that they were probably just west of Linden Ave. But that is just an educated guess.)

(Angel's side of the conversation was filmed on the outdoor police station set, at the studio.)
    • Last season, they filmed a scene with Doakes boarding a helicopter at Marina Green Park.  This season, Prado's Cuban Festival was shot in the parking lot next to the park, and the scene of Miguel & Dexter on the beach was filmed a short walk from it.

I shot the photos below in 2009.

The photo above is an example of one of the cage-like gates found at Shoreline Marina.

The photo above was taken from the far east end of Marina Green Park, looking north.
The two buildings on the left are the ones seen behind Barbara when she phones Angel.
(Normally, cars don't park on the grass - there was a Watchtower convention underway when I shot this photo.)

Here is an aerial photo of the general area. And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. In the first scene, you can tell that it is a marina because you can clearly see the boats docked in the scene.  But the key here is the distinctive metal "cage" which is also glimpsed in the background (and to a lesser extent, the palm trees).

These "cages" are actually gates which guard the gangways that lead down to the marina docks.  Those at Shoreline Marina are made of smooth metal tubes that have a slight bronze look to them, and a smooth, plus they have blue & white signs in their upper left corners (which can also be seen in the scene).

Unfortunately, almost every gangway entrance to the marina has one of these bronze gates (and there are palm trees everywhere in the marina, as well), so it's virtually impossible to pinpoint exactly which gate they were at when they were filming. But for such a minor scene, I suppose the general location will suffice.

The second scene is a bit easier. In the background, you can see part of two downtown buildings.

The one on the left is the Harborplace Tower, a condo located at 525 E. Seaside Way (it's the same building seen between Dexter & Miguel when they're on the beach). The building one to the right is the Long Beach Towers Apartments, at 600 Ocean Blvd. The big lawn in the foreground is clearly Marina Green Park.

(The round building, to the right, isn't seen in the scene, but it's the International Tower, at 700 Ocean Blvd, memorable from the opening scene of the original "Lethal Weapon" movie.)
