The location: Marina Del Rey.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A marina.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. In Newport Beach.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. Often, including Episode 10 (of season one), "The Perfect Couple: at the party on the yacht where Summer first realizes that she likes Seth Cohen; in Episode 8 (of season one), "The Rescue": where the quartet walk along a cobblestone path while talking about Marissa's problems with her mom; and in Episode 27 (of season one), "The Ties That Bind": where Seth sails his catamaran (Summer Breeze) - as well as the various episodes featuring Jimmy's boat, and that infamous first kiss atop a Ferris Wheel.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A marina, but not in Newport.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. It's Marina Del Rey, the largest pleasure craft marina in the Los Angeles area. It provides fine nautical backgrounds in many scenes, as well as a place for the characters to dock boats. Jimmy docks his boat here. Seth docks his catamaran here.

Marina Del Rey is located on the west coast of Los Angeles, between Venice on the north and LAX on the south. To reach Marina Del Rey, take the Marina (90) Freeway west to its end, turn left (south) on Lincoln Blvd, then turn right on one of the east/west streets such as Fiji Way or Mindanao Way.

Marina Del Rey shares the role of the Newport marina with two other local marinas: the Redondo Beach marina and occasionally the Shoreline Marina in Long Beach.

Here is a map link. And here's a link to the Marina's official website.

Jimmy lives on his boat, which is in a dock on the west side of Burton Chase Park, an unusual patch of green parkland right on the waters edge, at the west end of Mindanao Way, in Marina Del Rey.

Seth parks his catamaran in the docks in front of (west of) Fisherman's Village, a nautical shopping village on the water's edge, which you'll find at the west end of Fiji Way, in Marina Del Rey.

A scene where the kids walk along a cobblestone path next to the water (while talking about the fact that Marissa has run away from home) was shot on the path that runs along the west side of Fisherman's Village, next to the marina docks.

The scene in Episode 10 (of season one) "The Perfect Couple", where they throw a fund-raiser for the children's hospital on Caleb's yacht, was shot aboard a boat docked at Marina Del Rey (that's obvious from the distinctive buildings in the background). I can't be sure exactly where it was docked, but I tend to suspect that it, too, was at Fisherman's Village.

The most unlikely place where the marina popped up, though, was in the role of Portland, Oregon (in Episode 1 of season two, "The Distance") when Seth & Luke were together up at Luke's dad's place, (supposedly) in Portland. The background (in the scene where a girl in a bikini walks past their window) definitely reveals those very recognizable Marina City Club Towers of Marina Del Rey.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. I've been to Marina del Rey many times, so the view is familiar. It's easy to recognize the marina's main channel, because the Marina City Club Towers are easy to spot.
