The location: Alex's Apartment (later Trey's Apartment).

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. The beach apartment where Alex Kelly (the edgy female bartender at the Bait Shop) lived.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. On the coast (with an ocean view) of Newport Beach.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. Alex had a brief (and unlikely) affair with Seth, but she turned out to prefer girls, and ended up living with Marissa for a while, before breaking up with her and moving on.

Her apartment is first seen in the second season's Episode 7 (of season two), "The Family Ties", when Seth visited Alex at her place (and ran into some tough-looking guys staying there), including Episode 13, "The Test" (where Marissa walks in on a lesbian gathering there), and continuing through episode 19 (where Ryan's ex-con brother, Trey Atwood, moves into Alex's old apartment).

In Episode 19 (of season two), "The Rager", we also see the beach parking lot right across the street from Alex's apartment, where Sandy and Carter are holding surfboards.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A modest apartment house.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. At 316 Paseo de la Playa, on the south side of Redondo Beach, on the coast, right where Redondo Beach begins to climb up into the Palos Verdes hills (and across the street from a beach parking lot).

(I shot the photo to the right in 2006.)

If you know Redondo Beach, you know that there is a main street, called The Esplanade, which runs right above the beach (offering great views of the ocean and the Palos Verdes hills, if you're traveling south). Near the south end of the Esplanade, as it curves away from the coast, just bear right (stay with the ocean) onto a smaller street called Paseo de la Playa. You don't have far to go. When you pass a large beach parking lot on your right side, you'll know you're in the right neighborhood. The apartment house will be on your left (east) side - but it's not much to look at.

Here is a map link to the exact location.

This apartment building is located just a few doors down from another O.C. location: the apartment of Newport Living Magazine editor Carter Buckley.

[ Warning: These are private apartments. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their doors, or do anything else to disturb the residents!

That beach parking lot across the street is the one also seen in Episode 19 (of season 2) "The Rager", with Sandy & Carter and their surfboards. And on the beach below the parking lot, they filmed the night time scene where a drunken Trey tried to rape Marissa.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. This was fairly easy. I live in the South Bay, so I know The Esplanade when I see it. Taking a closer look at the shot from the show, I could see the top of a car across the street, letting me know there was a parking lot there. There's only one parking lot with a view of the ocean anywhere near the Esplanade, and that's near its south end. Blowing up the image, I could see the small 316 street number on the front of the house (not to mention the aqua "A" next to Alex's apartment, which is really there). So I just took the Esplanade south, hugged the ocean onto Paseo de la Playa until I reached the parking lot, then slowed down and looked for 316. Of course, it was the right place.
