What is it supposed to be on the show?
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode
1, of Season 6, "Those Kinds of Things".
First, we see a jogger running on the beach at Sunset, as she discovers a body that has washed ashore.
Next, the police (including Dexter, Debra, Quinn, Masuka and his students) arrive to check out the crime scene.
The body is lying on the sand, just under a pier.
intern shoots photos of the scene.
They identify the victim as Omar Rivera, the roadside fruit vendor, whose bloody intestines were found next to his fruit cart, but whose body had been missing.
lift the victim's shirt, they find that the Greek letters Alpha and
Omega have been carved into his torso, then he has been sewn back up
with thick thread.
the man's skin begins moving, as if there were something inside of
him. When Dexter clips the threads, a number of small, black snakes
come slithering out of the body.
Dexter & Masuka catch and bag them as evidence. When they count them, they see there are seven snakes.
(No doubt, the same baby snakes harvested earlier by Professor Gellar & Travis at the swamp, and matching the Biblical verse the Professor later quotes on the pier.)
Dexter says that someone cut the victim open, removed his intestines, and replaced them with snakes.
Masuka's male intern faints, causing Masuka
to replace him with Ryan, an attractive blond female student whom Debra refers
to as "the hottie".
What is it actually in real life?
Where can I find it in real life?
A. This is Long Beach, CA.
To be more specific, the beach between the Belmont Pier and the Olympic Pool, at the south end of 39th Street.
In the shot taken from under the
pier, the camera is looking east, and you can see both the Olympic Pool
building and the La Palapa café behind the investigators.
That's the same pier where they shot Professor Gellar & Travis quoting scripture at sunset, later in this episode.
They've shot near this spot several times before, so I've
gone to the area on more than one occasion just to shoot photos for
these Dexter pages.
Among the scenes previously shot nearby were the scenes of LaGuerta meeting with Miguel Prado & his brother at a cafe (from Season 3), of Batista & LaGuerta admitting their love for each other,(from Season 4), of the pervert stalking Astor on the beach (from Season 3), and of Debra interviewing some transvestite hookers (from Season 3).
I shot the photos below in 2009.
The top one is a photo of the Olympic Pool building and La Palapa café (to the right)
Both can be seen behind Dexter & his crew in the scene.
The second photo is a wide-angle shot of the beach east of the Belmont Pier
(between the Olympic Pool building and the pier), where the body is found.
Here is an aerial
photo of the location. And here is a map
The Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, mentioned in this article, is slated
for demolition late in 2014. They discovered seismic deficiencies in
the old building, so it will be torn down, and eventually replaced with
a new pool.
Palapa, the patio café which was the scene of several different
"Dexter" scenes over the years, is attached to the west side of the
pool building, so it will most likely be torn down as well.
Here, for the record, is a Google StreetView of the pool, when it was standing.
How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In previous seasons, I've
usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the 6th season, though,
I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I
already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan,
Jason, Elaine, Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all
In this case, I'm very familiar
with the area, so I recognized it immediately. I'd know that Olympic Pool building anywhere...
