The location: Divers Dock

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A dock.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere on the Miami coast.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. This small, green dock was seen twice in the second season, but as two separate locations.

  • The first scene takes place near the end of Episode 1 (of season 2), "It's Alive."
  • In the scene, we see divers recover the black plastic bags filled with the body parts of Dexter's many victims (which he had dumped into the ocean).

Dexter & Debra are in his apartment, watching a TV news report of the divers hauling the bags onto this dock.

That discovery sets into motion the main plotlines of the second season, as police realize there's a new serial killer (dubbed "The Bay Harbor Butcher"), and Lundy is called in to lead the investigation.

  • The second scene takes place near the end of Episode 2 (of season 2), "Waiting to Exhale".

We see Dexter on his boat, which is moored at the very same green dock (check the background).

We watch as he throws away the Barbie doll's head, which had been left in his refrigerator (last season) by the Ice Truck Killer, and which Dexter had been hanging onto as a keepsake from his dead brother.

(After he drops it into the water, he has a fantasy of his dead brother springing up out of the water to clasp his arm.)

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A dock.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This scene was shot in the Los Angeles harbor, at a small wooden dock floating off the southwest corner end of the berth/pier at the south end of Signal Street, in San Pedro, CA.

It is right next to (perhaps 100 yards southwest of) the historic Warehouse #1, where they filmed the scene of young Dexter standing on the roof.

It's located about a mile south of Ports O'Call Village, and just across the water (east) of the wharf where they filmed the railroad car scenes. It's also just across the main channel from (west of) Terminal Island prison.

( I shot the photo below , of Warehouse #1, in 2008, with a zoom lens, looking northeast from the Cabrillo Pier,
almost a mile away. The dock itself isn't visible in the photo, but is just to the right of the warehouse.)
