location: Dex & Deb Talk on a Dock
Q. Where can I find it in real life?
(Note the red X in the photo below.)
The building seen behind them, posing as the Miami Metro police station, is a hi-rise condo known as The Venetia, at 555 NE 15th Street, in Miami.
In the wide shots, you can also see (behind them and to the left) the Miami Herald newspaper building, at 1 Herald Plaza, and a 400-foot-tall radio tower on the water just offshore.
Below is a photo of the Sea Isle Marina, in Miami.
Here is a Bing StreetSide view of the pier, as seen from the Venetian Causeway.
Here is an aerial photo of the location. And here is a map link.
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the now, though,
I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
This time, though, I was on my own again, since it was a Miami location, rather than L.A.
Fortunately, it wasn't
hard, since you could see the Miami Herald building behind them, as
well as that large radio tower in the water nearby.
And then it got
even easier. As the camera followed them, I realized that the
building behind them was the same Miami condo they had previously
used for a fake exterior shot of the Miami Metro Police Station.
My first hunch was
that they might have green-screened it, by shooting the footage of Dex
& Deb walking on some local dock, and then inserted the Miami
scenery behind them. But when I took a close look at the Miami
didn't look like any local pier I know. And the pier where they
were walking in the scene definitely matched the real pier in
Miami. So the only question was whether they had recreated part of
the Miami pier back at the studio (and then used green screen), or whether
Michael & Jennifer actually went to Miami for the shoot.
I checked with someone from the show, and they told me that the actors were indeed in Miami.
But I must admit that I am still a
bit suspicious. The background in the closeup shots seems to rotate,
while the actors remain still. And the one distant walking shot is very
brief. Also, I heard nothing in the news at the time of either
Michael C. Hall or Jennifer Carpenter going to Miami for the shoot, and
their movements are usually tracked fairly well by the press & fan sites. So, I'm still not completely ruling out the green-screen possibility.
But from a location standpoint, the important thing is that the marina we're looking at in the scene is in Miami.
