DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Arlene's house

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A residential home.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. In Hialeah, Florida.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 11, of Season 7, "Do You See What I See?".

Arlene Schram is a witness who can put Hannah McKay in prison.

Hannah poisoned an abusive counselor at a halfway house when she was young, and Arlene knows about it.

So Debra, wanting to put Hannah behind bars, goes to Arlene's house to convince her to testify against Hannah.

We see Arlene's kids playing in a wading pool in the back yard.

Debra plays hardball, threatening to put Arlene in jail and to have her children taken away, if she doesn't cooperate.

Arlene asks for time to think about it, and Debra leaves.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A residential house.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. This house is located at 1442 Gordon Street, in Hollywood.

That's right across the street from (east of) the Sunset-Gower studio where they film Dexter.

They actually only used the back yard for this scene. There is a second house in the back (1440), and this scene appears to have been shot in between the two.

They have shot at many of the homes on Gordon Street in the past (not to mention nearby Fountain Ave), using the streets as a virtual back lot for the show.

These Gordon houses have been everything from Doakes' apartment to Boyd Fowler's house.  In fact, this same house was used as the home of Travis Marshall's sister last season.

Here is a Google Streetview of the location

[ Warning: This is private home.  Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything that might disturb the residents. ]

Here is an aerial photo of the location.  And here is a map link.

UPDATE: In the 8th and final season, they returned to Arlene's house, but this time they used a different house, on Beachwood Drive.  You can read about that new location here.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A.  In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the now, though, I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode airs, I already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Elaine, Mia, Joel, Susan, Eric, Jeff, Kerry & others. My thanks to all of them.

This tip came from Rick, and it's a good thing because this kind of back yard location could have been next-to-impossible to find...  (Thanks, Rick!)
