A. A small, outdoor café on a beach, called "Papa's".
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
A. Somewhere in Miami.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode 6, of Season 7, "Do the Wrong Thing".
We see Angel and his younger sister, Jamie, sitting at a table at a sunny, outdoor beach café.
Behind them, we see girls in thongs passing by carrying a surfboard, along with other beach-goers.
Angel asks Jamie how she likes the place.
She looks around at the Tiki hut-style café and says it's cute, but kind of a dive.
Angel then tells her that he's thinking of buying the restaurant.
says he doesn't have time to run a restaurant when he's a cop. Angel
tells her that he's thinking about retiring, and changing his life.
doesn't like the idea, and she tells Angel that he's always been
impulsive, coming up with wild ideas that get him into trouble.
It turns up again in Episode 8, "Argentina", when Rita's kids (Cody & Astor) come back into town. Jamie picks them up, and they meet Dexter & Debra at this restaurant. Dexter knows they're safe there, because the place is swarming in cops - since Angel now owns it.
When Astor criticizes Cody, he pulls some pot out of her purse, prompting Dexter & Debra to lecture her.
What is it actually in real life?
A. A small, outdoor snack stand on a beach..
Where can I find it in real life?
A. This is a familiar spot for the Dexter film crew: Alfredo's Kayak Café, near Bayshore Park, at that little inland beach (nicknamed "Horny Corner" by the locals) where 54th Place hits Ocean Blvd, in Long Beach, CA.
They have filmed at this small beach in virtually every season, starting from the very first (this was where Dexter met Rudy in Season One) to this most recent season (they filmed the scene of Hannah's flower mart here as well).
If you look across the water
behind them, those homes you see are on Naples Island. The water is not
the ocean, per se, but part of Alamitos Bay, an inlet which separates
Naples Island from the Long Beach peninsula.
This location is just five blocks southeast from the actual beach where they filmed the Santa's Holiday Adventure scene, with Hannah & Dexter.
A. In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the now, though,
I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode airs, I
already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Elaine, Mia, Joel, Susan, Eric, Jeff, Kerry & others. My thanks to all of
But I would recognize
this place anywhere. I've been here several times, and driven
past even more times. I went there most recently during the
off-season, to shoot a series of photos of the area (some of which you
see above) - because I knew darn well that they'd be back soon to film
here... and they were.
