Seeing Stars: Final Resting Places of the Stars

.

AN INTRODUCTION.

Some people feel that there is something odd or disrespectful about visiting the grave of a movie star.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

For the most part, Hollywood celebrities are people who have spent their entire lives in pursuit of fame, in hopes of attaining some form of immortality on the stage and silver screen. The true tragedy would be if they were forgotten by their fans.

Just as you would visit the grave of a beloved relative or an good friend, so do many fans seek out the final resting places of the silver screen idols who brought so much joy into the lives of so many.

Fortunately, most Hollywood stars are buried right here in Los Angeles county. And this section of "Seeing Stars" tells you where you can find them.

So feel free to leave a flower on the grave of your favorite actor or actress, and take the time to remember the wonderful moments they have given us...

There are some interesting coincidences (and old friends) to be found in the cemeteries of Hollywood; here are a few of them:

  • Both "The Scarecrow." (Ray Bolger) and "The Tin Man" (Jack Haley) from "The Wizard of Oz" are buried at Holy Cross.
  • Two of the stars of the comedy "Some Like It Hot", plus the director of that movie, are buried at Pierce Bros Westwood Park: Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe and Billy Wilder. And so is Jack Lemmons's longtime pal, Walter Matthau.
  • Three famous movie directors: Cecil B. DeMille ("Sunset Blvd."), Victor Fleming ("Gone With the Wind"), and John Huston ("The African Queen), are all buried at Hollywood Forever Memorial Park.
  • Both "Ben Cartwright." (Lorne Greene) and" Little Joe Cartwright" (Michael Landon) from TV's "Bonanza" are buried at Hillside Cemetery.
  • Two cast members of the "Our Gang" / "Little Rascals" comedies happen to both be buried at Hollywood Forever: Darla Hood and Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer.

  • Two of the child actors from Steven Speilberg's horror film "Poltergeist" are buried at Pierce Bros. Westwood: little Heather O'Rourke & the actress who played her sister in the movie, Dominique Dunne.
  • Both Humphrey Bogart and Sidney Greenstreet, who starred together in "Casablanca," are buried at Forest Lawn Glendale. (Ingrid Bergman was cremated, and Paul Henreid is buried at Woodlawn.)
  • Two stars of "From Here to Eternity," Burt Lancaster and Donna Reed, are both buried at Pierce Bros. Westwood.
  • Both John Huston (who directed "The Maltese Falcon") and Peter Lorre (who co-starred in that classic movie) are buried at Hollywood Forever.
  • Four well-known character actors from popular TV sitcoms are buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, including 'Granny' from "The Beverly Hillbillies," the town drunk 'Otis' from "The Andy Griffith Show," Marlo Thomas' boyfriend 'Don Hollinger' from "That Girl," and 'Mrs. Roper' from "Three's Company."
  • Both of the men who founded Paramount Pictures, Jesse Lasky and Cecil B. DeMille (the men who shot the first movie in Hollywood) are buried at Hollywood Forever; which is located right next door to Paramount Studios. The man who ran rival Columbia Pictures, Harry Cohn, is also buried there.
  • Both Charlie Chaplin's mother and Chaplin's son are buried at Hollywood Forever, although at opposite ends of the cemetery.

Yet oddly enough, some of the most famous teams in Hollywood history are buried far apart, including Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, Pickford & Fairbanks, and Lucy & Desi :

  • Lou Costello is buried at Calvary cemetery, while his partner Bud Abbott was cremated.

  • Both Lucille BallDesi Arnaz were cremated, but Lucy's ashes can be found at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, while Desi's ashes were scattered.

Bear in mind that some areas of some cemeteries are private and off-limits to visitors. This is true at some of the Forest Lawn parks, especially at Forest Lawn Glendale. Follow their rules and regulations when you visit there. Also remember that all cemeteries deserve to be treated with dignity and respect from visitors.
