Bill is seeing Portia Bellefleur, both as a business partner and a lover, so he goes with her to meet her grandmother, Caroline Bellefleur, at her grand Southern mansion.
There, they exchange pleasantries, and Bill encounters Sheriff Andy (Portia's brother).
( You might recognize the family matriarch as Katherine Helmond, who payed 'Mona' on the popular sitcom "Who's the Boss?" )
The
grandmother is a genealogy buff (at least when it comes to her own
family), and she brings out a large book containing a family tree.
There appears to be some relationship between the Bellefleurs and Bill's family, the Comptons.
Suddenly,
the grandmother looks ill and excuses herself. Bill abruptly
leaves, telling Portia that they can never see each other again.
Following him out to the porch, Portia demands to know why.
Bill reluctantly explains that the book shows that he is her great-great-great-great grandfather.
