Alas, as of 2003, Designer Donuts has gone out of business and closed shop.

I will leave this page up for a while, for anyone interested in reading about the shop, but bear in mind that the article was written when the donut shop was open and doing business.

Last but not least, is Designer Donuts, who call themselves the "Favorite of the Stars." And when it comes to donuts, their claim may be true.

Located right across the street from the Crossroads of the World center on Sunset Boulevard, the folks at Designer Donuts are caterers to many of the nearby movie studios. They've served their fancy, exotic, gourmet donuts to the casts & crews of such TV shows as "Bob Newhart," "Dallas," "Moonlighting," "Cheers," "Family Ties," "Perfect Strangers," "Beauty & The Beast," etc.

Designer makes what many people believe are the best donuts in town, at reasonable prices, and their tiny Sunset Boulevard store (in a small strip mall) is open to the public. So, while you might not see a star here, this may be the only spot in town where you can chow down on same delights served to the stars and not have to worry about the cost.

Then again, if you look at the north wall of the shop, you'll spot plenty of stars - the wall is lined with 8x10 autographed photos of their happy celebrity customers, including Ed Asner, Angela Lansbury, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

(There's also an interesting Hollywood story behind Designer Donuts... Back in 1968, a young Steven Spielberg received a $10,000 loan from Designer Donuts founder Denis Hoffman, money Spielberg needed to complete his first film, a 20-minute short titled "Amblin" (which is now also the name of Steven's production company).. Later, in 1985, Spielberg lent Hoffman the money he needed to begin Designer Donuts, and became a limited partner in the gourmet donut business. In 1995, though, the two were involved in a nasty lawsuit over the contracts.)

Be aware that Designer Donuts has rather unusual hours. It's closed on Saturdays and Sundays, and on weekdays it is open only fron 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Getting there: Designer Donuts is located on Sunset. Blvd., just three blocks east of Highland Ave., across from Crossroads of the World and Blessed Sacrament Church.
