When
Dexter finds Isaak waiting in his apartment to kill him, he gets the
upper hand by phoning his own answering machine (pretending to be
someone else) and leaving a message saying he will meet Dexter at
"Schooner or Later".
Isaak sees this as a chance to catch him, so he packs up and heads to the restaurant.
In this scene, we see Isaak enter and take a seat on the restaurant's patio.
A waiter brings him a phone and says he has a call.
Isaak takes the call, and it turns out to be from Dexter, who is watching him from nearby.
Isaak tells Dexter that he knows he killed Viktor. And when Dexter denies it, Viktor tells him that Louis gave him his name.
Dexter
realizes that Isaak was the one who killed Louis. and Isaak confirms
it. Isaak also says he plans to get not just Dexter, but also any
other police involved in Viktor's death, including Debra.
This disturbs Dexter, who tells Isaak that he works alone, and no one else was involved.
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
A. A restaurant with a patio, only not in Miami.
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. For once, it's exactly what it appears to be: a seaside restaurant named "Schooner or Later".
They must have liked the pun, because they didn't change the name this time.
You'll find the real Schooner or Later, where they filmed this scene, at the Alamitos Marina , at 241 N. Marina Drive, in Long Beach, CA.
In fact, it's only a block away from the dock where Isaac killed Louis on Dexter's boat. And less than a mile from Phillip Barnes' house.
Still, it can be a little tricky
to find at the marina. It's on Marina Drive, but that's not terribly
helpful, since there is more than one Marina Drive at the marina.
This is situated at a major bend
in Marina Drive where it goes from being called North Marina Drive to
where it's renamed East Marina Drive...
The restaurant is sort of hidden
away, in the back corner of a large, low blue building called the
Alamitos Bay Marina Center (which houses a number of yacht &
boating-related businesses).
There is a sign out by the road, if you look for it, but its southeast of the actual location.
So what kind of restaurant is
Schooner or Later? Well, since it's situated right on the water at the
marina, as you might expect, it's a casual spot, mostly patio seating,
specializing in breakfast & lunch (and drinks, of course).
Long lines are common at peak hours, so come early and/or avoid weekends.
A. In the early seasons, I usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the now, though,
I've developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode airs, I
already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Elaine, Mia, Joel, Susan, Eric, Jeff, Kerry & others. My thanks to all of
them.
This one was easy: they
used the restaurant's actual name. I know all of the restaurants
in that area, so it was obvious where they filmed it. I then went
and shot the photos you see above, matching the scene.
