The location: Liddy phones Quinn

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

A. Inside a shop. Signs on the shop window read "Instant Photo" and "Snacks".

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

A. In a short scene in Episode 9, of Season 5, "Teenage Wasteland".

Quinn has just told Debra that he loves her, and obtained no response from her, so he's angry and in no mood to talk when he gets an unwanted call from Stan Liddy.

We see Liddy standing in a shop and looking at the photos he shot of Dexter & Lumen loading luggage onto Dexter's boat at night.

He tells Quinn about the photos and asks him to meet him for a beer.

Quinn replies that it's 7 AM, which doesn't bother Liddy. Quinn says he has to work, and when Liddy persists, Quinn hangs up on him.

Liddy spots little boy in the shop, watching him.

Liddy makes a gun gesture with his thumb and forefinger and "shoots" the boy, who rushes back to his parents.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

A. A waterside shopping area.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. This scene was shot at Shoreline Village, a touristy, nautically-themed shopping & dining village, at Shoreline Village Drive, in Long Beach, CA.

They used a vacant yellow storefront just west of the village's carousel, number 419-I, between Artist Norm's shop and a hot sauce store called Hot Licks.

There is a narrow, enclosed mall (or hallway) running between shops here, with red tile floors. You can see it behind the little boy in the top photo.

They have filmed at the Village before on several occasions.

On the same day they shot this scene, they filmed another just down the boardwalk - the scene of Astor shoplifting.

In the first season, they filmed the scene of the police discovering a dismembered body arranged under a Christmas tree at the Village.

In the third season, they filmed a fake restaurant scene on the boardwalk nearby.

They used one of the local cafes for the scene where Dexter set up Miguel's brother, Ramon.

And they have filmed several scenes inside the bar at Tequila Jack's.

I shot the photos below in September 2010:
(The filming was underway in the yellow storefront, and perhaps also in the adjacent tan one.).

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A. I was actually there when they filmed this scene. They were filming in public, the boardwalk wasn't blocked off, and they only stopped shoppers from walking between their lights and the storefront when the cameras were actually rolling.

Likewise, the small enclosed mall area (seen behind the kid) was also open to pedestrians, so I took a brief stroll there to observe the goings-on. The windows on the mall side provided a good view of the interior...
