The
location: Rooftop Edge |
![]() Q. What is it supposed to be on the show? A. A rooftop.
Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show? A. Somewhere
in Miami.
Q. When did we see it on the show? A. In Episode 1 (of Season 2), "It's Alive". This
scene follows an earlier scene in the same episode where young Dexter asks
to listen to his father's heartbeat (after a scare), and seems amazed that
it is beating fast. This scene is another flashback to his childhood, in which we see young Dexter standing at the very edge of the roof of a tall building, as if about to jump off. With the wind blowing through his hair, he holds his arms out at his side, then puts a hand over his own heart, and closes his eyes - risking fate. Just as it looks as if he might fall or jump, his father (Harry) appears and pulls him back from the edge. When
Harry yells at him about trying to kill himself, young Dexter explains
that he wasn't trying to kill himself, he was simply trying to feel
alive. Harry understands and hugs his adopted son.
A. A dockside
warehouse.
Q. Where can I find it in real life? A. This scene was shot in the Los Angeles harbor, atop the historic Warehouse #1, which is located at the south end of Berths 59 & 60, at the south end of Signal Street, in San Pedro, CA. ( It appears they shot from the east side of the warehouse. ) It is just a few yards from the green dock where they shot the diver's scene. It's
located about a mile south of Ports O'Call Village, and just across
the water (east) of the wharf where they filmed the railroad car scenes.
It's also just across the main channel from (west of) Terminal Island prison. (
I shot the photo below in 2008, with a zoom lens, looking northeast
from the Cabrillo Pier. )
Here is an aerial
photo of the warehouse & pier. And here is a map
