location: Doakes' Apartment.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
A. An apartment
Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?
A. In Miami,
Q. When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode 4 (of Season 1), "Let's Give The Boy A Hand".
We first see the place when Sgt. Doakes pulls his car into the driveway. As he's getting out, he spots two guys sitting in a white car, watching his house. He chases them off.
We see it again later, in the same episode, when he once again pulls into his driveway. Getting out of his car, he looks around, but doesn't see anyone.
Suddenly, two mob guys he's angered jump him from behind, pull a mask over his face, and throw him in the trunk. They take him to a garage, beat him up, and are just about to shoot him, when the cops show up and rescue him.
Turns out his
fellow cops set him up on a sting, without his knowledge, to trap the mob
guys. And it worked.
Q. What is it actually in real life?
A. An apartment
house, but far from Miami.
Q. Where can I find it in real life?
A. This apartment house is right across the street from (east of) Sunset-Gower Studios, where they film "Dexter".
You'll find it at 1422 Gordon Street, in Hollywood, CA. That's on the east side of the street.
(The garage they take Doakes to is most likely the studio parking building across the street.)
Warning: These are private apartments. Do
not knock on their doors, trespass on their property,
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. Back when I was first tracking down Season One locations, I knew they were filming in Long Beach, Miami, Marina Del Rey and the South Bay in general. But at the time, I didn't realize they also filmed near the studio. So I never looked there when I was trying to find Doakes' apartment, and this spot remained a mystery for quite a while.
later, in 2010, a fan, Geoff, nailed
it down. (Thanks, Geoff!)
