DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Angel & Quinn Smoking a Joint

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A parking lot.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere near a channel, in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 4, of Season 6, "A Horse of a Different Color".

Quinn and Batista are sitting in Angel's new Firebird Trans Am, parked in a parking lot.  We can see a channel and a bridge in the background.

Quinn moves the sun visor and a joint drops out.  He asks Angel if it's his.  Angel denies it, saying it must have belonged to car's the former owner.

Quinn lights up the joint.  Angel angrily asks what he's doing.  Quinn tries to talk him into smoking it.  Angel says they're on duty, and that he hasn't smoked pot since he was 16.

But then he caves in and takes a drag.

We see them later, stoned (with the War song Steal the Wine playing on the car radio), when they receive a call telling them that the police have found the address of a suspect in the Doomsday case.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A parking lot.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This is a long parking lot located just northwest of the Davies Launch Ramp, at 6200 Marina Drive, in Long Beach, CA.

(The scene was shot near the narrow northwest end of that lot.)

That's on the southwest edge of the Alamitos channel separating the Marina Pacifica waterfront community from the northeast side of Naples Island.

It is directly across the channel from "Mother's Beach" and Marine Park - which was the location they used in Season 1 for Cody's swingset.

It's northwest of Second Street, and kitty-cornered (across the channel) from the Marine Stadium.

The building seen in the background is at Mother's Beach, on Naples Island.

The bridge you see in the background (to the right of that building) is the Appian Way bridge, which leads from Naples Island to the Marine Stadium. (Except for the shot of Angel outside his car, talking on the phone. The bridge seen behind him in that shot is the 2nd Street Bridge.)

This location is nearby several past locations, including (from this season): Deb's shootout, Angel's restaurant, the beach baptism, the Tooth Fairy's retirement village, and the Fruit Vendor murder scene.

And last season (5), they shot the scene where the barrel girls' truck accident took place, just over the bridge from here.

I shot the photos below in October 2011, from that parking lot.

This top photo is the view seen behind Angel & Quinn, including the Mother's Beach building, and the Appian Way bridge:

    This wider view shows
(to the left) the playground equipment at Mother's Beach, seen in Season 1:

And here's a photo of the parking lot itself, where Angel's Firebird was parked during the scene:

Here is an aerial photo of the lot. Here is a Google StreetView.  And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A.  I recognized that distinctive building at Mother's Beach/Marine Park from the time I went there to shoot photos of Cody's swingset, back in 2008.  And I knew the bridge had to be the Appian Way bridge that leads to that park.

So all I had to do was use aerial photos from Bing and Google to pinpoint the parking lot exactly across the channel from those landmarks, and then check the screencaps to match the car's location within the parking lot.  The next sunny day, I drove down and shot the matching photos you see above.

(And after the episode aired, a fan, Chris Greene, emailed me to let me know about the location.  Thanks, Chris!)
